There’s a new way to run Android apps on Mac

The "Mac.apk" project allows Mac users to install Android apps directly into their Applications folder, mimicking the installation process of native Mac applications. The project is still in early stages, with some functionalities, particularly in games with anti-cheat mechanisms, potentially not operating as intended. Initial trials have shown a generally smooth user experience, indicating significant potential for the tool.

Top 5 Proxy vs VPN for Android App Developers Tools to Secure Test Builds

In Android app development, maintaining connectivity, security, and debugging capabilities is crucial. When connecting to a London edge server, all requests must be visible to QA teams, but using a consumer VPN can hinder debugging proxies. A debugging proxy allows developers to inspect request headers and modify data by terminating TLS on their workstation. In contrast, a VPN creates an encrypted tunnel for all device traffic but prevents debugging proxies from intercepting packets. TorGuard is a hybrid solution that combines a VPN with SOCKS5 and V2Ray endpoints, allowing for traffic encryption and application-specific proxying. mitmproxy is an open-source tool that enables scripted request manipulation and can intercept various traffic types. Tailscale uses a WireGuard-based mesh network to provide stable private IPs for devices without needing port forwarding. HTTP Toolkit offers a rootless interception method for Android, directing traffic to a laptop without complex configurations. WireGuard is a high-speed self-hosted VPN that encrypts packets but does not allow for inspection. To inspect traffic while changing geographic egress, developers can run mitmproxy on a laptop and connect it to a VPN, ensuring the proxy is closest to the app. For debugging Android HTTPS traffic, a proxy is preferred for reading or rewriting requests, while a VPN is better for changing exit IPs or encrypted routing. SOCKS5 masks IP addresses but does not encrypt traffic.

Did Mike Tomlin’s Minecraft obsession derail NFL coaching career?

Mike Tomlin, the former head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, has been building an expansive Minecraft city for over a decade, starting on PlayStation 3 as a way to bond with his children. He continued to develop this project through various console generations, ultimately reaching the PlayStation 5. During Tomlin's coaching tenure from 2007 to 2025, the Steelers had a playoff record of 5-3 in his first seven seasons, including two Super Bowl appearances, but struggled in the following 12 years with a 3-9 playoff record. Former NFL player T.J. Ward humorously suggested that Tomlin's dedication to Minecraft could have impacted his coaching performance, although he acknowledged that many factors influence playoff outcomes. Tomlin stepped down from coaching in January and may now have more time to complete his Minecraft city.

5 Open-Source Android Apps to Unlock Your Device

Android manufacturers curate devices, often leading to frustration for users who struggle to find specific settings due to the absence of desired features. The open-source community offers tools to enhance device functionality. MT Manager allows deep app modification directly on devices, providing access to app decompiling and editing without needing a desktop. It requires root permissions for its most powerful features and is not available on Google Play. Install with Options enables users to bypass installation restrictions on Android 7.0 and later, allowing the installation of apps outside the Google Play Store by using shell-level privileges or root access. Canta Debloater helps users safely remove carrier bloatware without root access on devices running Android 9.0 and above, using color-coded safety guidance to assist in the uninstallation process. ColorBlendr offers precise control over Material You color palettes on Android 12 and newer, allowing users to customize colors and themes with a live preview function. It requires elevated access via Root, Shizuku, or Wireless ADB. Kvaesitso Launcher replaces the default home screen with a search-centric interface, streamlining app navigation through a unified search bar that handles queries for apps, contacts, files, and calendar events. It is available on GitHub, F-Droid, and IzzyOnDroid.

Five Days After the Steam Frame Shipped, Its SteamOS Was Booting on Android Handhelds

Valve's SteamOS now runs on Android gaming handhelds, thanks to two hobby projects. The operating system image from the Steam Frame, complete with Game Mode and KDE desktop, has been repackaged to work on Snapdragon handhelds sold by AYN, AYANEO, KONKR, and Retroid. Adjustments were made to optimize performance, and initial tests show promising results, although some games may face performance issues. Installing the SteamOS image involves replacing the handheld's bootloader and requires specific hardware, a compatible microSD card, a PC, and a Steam account with games.

GitHub AI Security Agent Finds 24 Android Vulnerabilities Including Account Takeover Flaws

GitHub Security Lab's open-source AI security agent identified 24 vulnerabilities in various Android applications, including critical flaws in the OsmAnd navigation app and the Wikipedia app for Android. The OsmAnd vulnerability allows a malicious app to silently import and replace settings, potentially enabling covert location tracking. The Wikipedia app's vulnerability involves inadequate hostname validation for deep links, allowing attackers to load malicious content and potentially take over user accounts. The research highlights the effectiveness of AI in identifying vulnerabilities while emphasizing the need for human validation. The GitHub Security Lab Taskflow Agent automates security research workflows, focusing on mobile entry points and evaluating them against Android-specific vulnerability classes. The findings stress the importance of expert review for AI-generated results.

The Copilot+ PC brand is dead — here’s how to reclaim and remap the Copilot key

Microsoft has shifted its branding strategy by discontinuing the Copilot+ designation for the newly launched Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch models, despite these models technically qualifying for the label. This change has caused confusion among consumers who purchased Copilot+ PCs to access the latest laptop iterations. Users with the Copilot experience are questioning the functionality of the Copilot key, which may feel redundant. Non-Copilot+ PCs and keyboards still feature a Copilot key, leading to user frustrations regarding branding inconsistencies. To address this, users can cover the Copilot key with stickers, with options available for black or white keyboards being easier to find than for gray or vibrant Type Covers.
