Kowloon Walled City, established on the remnants of a military fort in British Hong Kong, peaked in 1989 with over 35,000 residents in just six and a half acres, making it the most densely populated place on Earth. The area was characterized by chaotic architecture, interconnected buildings, and narrow alleyways, functioning as a vibrant hub of illegal trading and organized crime despite being classified as a slum. Architect Sluda Builds has recreated Kowloon Walled City in Minecraft, accurately positioning buildings and capturing various architectural styles, but the virtual representation lacks the vibrant life and human experiences that defined the original Walled City.

In the early 1980s, the concept of a graphical interface was still a visionary dream, as computers were primarily navigated through text commands. Microsoft, with its MS-DOS software, was a leader in this text-based era. Bill Gates recognized the need for user-friendly computers, leading to the development of Windows, first introduced in 1983 and officially launched on November 20, 1985. Prior to this, elements of graphical interfaces had been conceptualized in the 1960s by Douglas Engelbart's team and realized in 1973 by Xerox with its Alto computer. The Alto's graphical interface inspired developers, including Gates and Steve Jobs. However, the initial reception of Windows was not successful, indicating challenges for Microsoft in redefining personal computing.

The fighting game community has long desired a shift from consoles to PCs for major tournaments, but this change has not yet occurred on a large scale. Valve recently introduced its Steam Machine systems, which may encourage tournament organizers to adopt PCs. The PlayStation 5 has been the dominant console in competitive gaming for five years, but players have reported issues such as overheating and input lag. While many competitors use PCs for personal setups due to advantages like reduced lag, barriers to widespread adoption remain, including hardware consistency challenges. The Steam Machine features a uniform hardware experience with an AMD 6-core Zen 4 CPU, AMD RDNA3 GPU, and 16GB of DDR5 RAM, but concerns exist about its performance compared to the PlayStation 5. Additionally, the higher cost of gaming PCs and logistical challenges in acquiring multiple systems for events complicate the transition. Despite the potential of the Steam Machine, the PlayStation brand is expected to remain prevalent in the competitive scene for the foreseeable future.

Meta Platforms Inc. is enhancing WhatsApp to allow communication with users on other messaging platforms, responding to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) mandating interoperability. The initiative, which began in early 2024, is currently in beta testing in Europe and utilizes the Signal Protocol for secure communications. Third-party apps can submit integration requests to Meta, which will conduct security reviews before allowing message exchanges. The beta version currently supports only basic text messaging with BirdyChat. Users can manage their third-party inboxes and block unwanted services, with a focus on security measures like client-side scanning. Meta plans to expand interoperability features, including group chats by 2025 and calling features by 2027. While the current rollout is limited to Europe, it may influence global standards for messaging interoperability.
