Microsoft just added two more reasons to install PowerToys on your Windows PC

PowerToys has introduced new utilities to enhance user experience, including Mouse Button Lock, which allows users to hold a mouse button temporarily for tasks requiring prolonged pressure, and CursorHide, which hides the mouse pointer after inactivity. The Command Palette now features a quick-access shelf for pinned commands, and users can utilize keyboard shortcuts for easier navigation. ZoomIt has added a Snip with dictation capability, allowing audio descriptions to accompany visual snips. New command-line tools include Advanced Paste, Light Switch, and Peek, among others. The Keyboard Manager has improved with tap-alone remaps and easier editing options. Other updates include enhancements to Color Picker, Text Extractor, FancyZones, Screen Ruler, and more, as well as fixes for memory issues and improved usability across various features.

Windows 10 users were right: Windows 11 still can’t drag the taskbar, so Microsoft is testing a menu instead

Windows 10 allowed users to drag the taskbar to any screen edge, a feature missing in Windows 11, which initially frustrated users. Microsoft is currently testing a new right-click menu in Insider Preview Build 26340.9750 that enables users to reposition the taskbar without accessing the Settings menu. This menu includes buttons for moving the taskbar to the left, top, right, or bottom of the screen. Although the menu is available in the Experimental channel, it remains hidden from casual users and has not been officially announced. Testing confirmed that the taskbar can be moved smoothly between positions, although some minor inconsistencies with the Start menu were noted. The right-click menu concept has been in development for some time, as indicated by a previously deleted video from a Microsoft engineer. Users previously had to navigate through Settings to change the taskbar position, and while Microsoft reintroduced some movement capabilities, the process is still cumbersome. The auto-hide feature is only available when the taskbar is at the bottom, limiting customization options. Microsoft is also exploring additional features, including different taskbar positions per monitor and the potential return of drag-and-drop functionality.

The compression process may take time, as seen when it took about two hours to compress 333GB of data. While drive compression can consume CPU resources and slightly increase loading times, the impact is minimal on modern computers. Users can also selectively compress specific files or folders to manage performance better.

Why Windows 11 still ships with Windows 95’s memory manager hidden inside it

Windows 11 includes a compatibility feature called EmulateHeap, which allows legacy applications to access Windows 95’s memory management system. This feature is present in the Windows 11 26H2 version and enables users to run older applications that depend on the original memory manager. Microsoft modified Windows 95's memory management specifically for the game SimCity, creating a workaround that prevented memory from being freed immediately. EmulateHeap was developed to address compatibility issues for various applications that relied on Windows 95's memory management quirks. It works by redirecting an application’s heap calls to mimic the behavior of Windows 95. EmulateHeap is part of the Compatibility Administrator tool within the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK), which supports Windows 11 26H2. Users can locate EmulateHeap in the Compatibility Administrator by creating a new database and searching for compatibility fixes. Despite this support, some users have reported issues with certain games after updates. Microsoft continues to support Windows 95’s heap manager for select older applications but has discontinued support for others, like 3D Pinball, due to technical limitations.

“C’mon, man”: Former Windows boss calls Windows 11’s taskbar unusable, as Windows 11 26H2 fails to bring back Windows 10-like features

Mikhail Parakhin, the former head of Windows and Bing at Microsoft, criticized the Windows 11 taskbar as "unusable," particularly after the 26H2 update, which did not restore the ability to auto-hide the taskbar when positioned at the top or sides. He expressed disappointment over the lack of features he advocated for, such as a movable taskbar with auto-hide functionality, which he believes is optimal for productivity. The September 2026 Patch Tuesday update allowed users to move and resize the taskbar, but auto-hide is still not available for non-bottom placements. Users must navigate through Windows Settings to adjust the taskbar, unlike the drag-and-drop feature in Windows 10. Additionally, the right-click menu in Windows 11 is limited compared to Windows 10, lacking options to lock or unlock the taskbar. Parakhin, now the CTO at Shopify, continues to use Windows for work and has noted that users may have to wait months for Windows 11 to fully integrate functionalities from Windows 10.

Windows update patches a whopping 1,400 security bugs – including 2 zero days

Microsoft released the October Windows update, addressing over 1,400 vulnerabilities, including 80 critical vulnerabilities and two zero-day exploits. This update is the final supported update for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions and the first for Windows 11 26H2. Notable enhancements include improvements to File Explorer and refined Bluetooth connectivity. One zero-day vulnerability, CVE-2026-96951, has been exploited in the wild, allowing remote attackers to bypass security protections. The second zero-day, CVE-2026-108398, could enable attackers to circumvent security measures in Microsoft’s .NET Framework. Windows 11 users can install the update via Settings and Windows Update, while Windows 10 users can follow a similar process. Each annual version, such as 24H2, will lose support after 24 months, necessitating an upgrade to Windows 11, version 26H2, for continued security updates. The update also introduces a feature to remap the Copilot key for enhanced user flexibility.
