Google's new system called DeliQueue was meant to improve gaming performance on Android 17, but instead, it has caused a bug that is making gaming worse.
Google is introducing a selective backup feature for Android users, allowing granular control over app data management. This update is initially rolling out to Pixel devices and users of Google Play Services version 26.24. Users can now selectively manage backups for each app, which helps conserve cloud storage space. The feature is available for those using Android 16 and Android 17, with other manufacturers expected to adopt it soon. Once activated, data is securely backed up to the cloud, but users should be aware that disabling backup for an app will permanently delete its previously backed-up data. To manage backups, users can go to their device’s settings under Google Services > Backup > Backup details. The rollout is gradual, primarily targeting Google Pixel smartphones. Most users will receive the update automatically, and they can check their version of Google Play Services in the settings.
Sixteen years ago, the author began their PhD at UC Berkeley, where they were advised to focus on analytics rather than OLTP databases, which were considered a solved problem. However, upon developing Databricks, they found that OLTP databases were cumbersome, challenging to scale, and fragile. This led to the creation of Lakebase, a serverless Postgres database designed to address these issues by externalizing the write-ahead log (WAL) and data files into independent services.
Lakebase architecture separates the WAL into a distributed service called SafeKeeper and data files into another service called PageServer, allowing for improved durability, scalability, and performance. This architecture eliminates data loss risks associated with disk failures and misconfigurations, simplifies high availability, and allows for elastic compute resources.
Lakebase also introduces LTAP (Lake Transactional/Analytical Processing), which enables transactions and analytics to operate on a single data copy in real-time, avoiding the need for separate data copies and reducing costs. The system retains Postgres's ACID semantics while storing data in open columnar formats, making it accessible to both transactional and analytical engines without the delays and complexities of traditional replication methods.
The architecture allows for unlimited storage, serverless compute, and instant branching, while ensuring that analytics can read the most current transactional data without affecting transactional workloads. LTAP aims to unify transactional and analytical processing by leveraging distinct compute engines for each workload while integrating at the storage layer.
Microsoft has released the optional Windows 11 June update, KB5095093, which improves the performance of File Explorer by addressing launch speed and overall functionality. The update includes a redesign of the Home tab for better file indexing, new quick actions for file management, improved responsiveness when mounting disk images, and enhanced address bar functionality. This update will become mandatory by July 2026.
Google is introducing a new utility app named “Signatures” for Android users, starting to appear on Pixel devices and select Android smartphones with the June 2026 Play system update. The app is operational on devices like the Google Pixel 10 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, but not on the Oppo Find X9 Ultra, despite the same update. The app serves as a repository for users' digital signatures, which can be drawn, typed, or scanned. Its integration with other applications remains uncertain, and it can only be accessed by manually launching its components. The app is designated as (com.google.android.signature), version “17,” and is compatible with Android 12 and newer versions. It is not available through the Play Store and is distributed exclusively via Play System Updates.
Microsoft has notified users of Windows 11 Home and Pro about the upcoming end of support for the 24H2 release, which has been available for two years and will conclude its support in a few months. The support timeline for Windows 11 versions is 24 months for consumer versions and 36 months for commercial users. The current fully supported version is 25H2, which can be upgraded to from 24H2, ensuring support until October 2027. The rollout of 26H2 is expected to begin this fall.
Google is rolling out an update that allows users to manage Android backups on a per-app basis, moving away from the previous all-or-nothing approach. Users can access this feature through Settings > Accounts & backup > Google backup, where they can see the three apps using the most storage and toggle backups for each app. Disabling the toggle stops future backups and deletes existing data for that app. The Device data section, including SMS messages and call history, remains unaffected. This feature is currently available on Pixel smartphones running Android versions 16 and 17 with version 26.24 of Google Play Services.
The latest updates for Windows 11, particularly for Windows Insiders, include a new option to resize the taskbar, allowing users to adjust its height and icon size. The "show smaller taskbar buttons" feature has been enhanced to include a "small" setting for the taskbar. Additionally, improvements have been made to File Explorer, including better reliability of thumbnail previews for cloud files, a fix for the OneDrive shortcut, and a correction for the confirmation dialog when deleting files. System sounds have also been improved for dark mode users. The Xbox mode has been rebranded to XBOX mode, and the Windows K2 initiative is focused on addressing various issues within Windows 11.
Microsoft has released new preview versions in the Windows Insider channels, focusing on refining the taskbar in Windows 11. The latest Insider Preview versions include a new option called “Taskbar size” in the “Experimental” release channel (Build 26300.8758), with early screenshots indicating a default setting of “Small.” Users can also dock the taskbar on any side of the monitor. Improvements to system sounds in dark mode and more reliable thumbnail previews for cloud files in File Explorer's preview panel are also included in the Beta Preview (Build 26220.8754). Microsoft has restructured the Insider Preview Program, reducing it from four channels to two: Experimental and Beta, with the Release Preview channel remaining. Switching between Insider Preview channels has been simplified, allowing users to change channels more flexibly.
WhatsApp is introducing a feature that allows users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers by creating unique usernames. This feature aims to enhance privacy and security, enabling users to connect solely by exchanging usernames. Users will receive notifications when the feature becomes available in their countries, and creators, small businesses, and organizations can claim usernames they use on other Meta platforms. Usernames will be limited to 35 characters, and high-profile individuals will not be able to register their names. Despite these changes, experts express concerns about WhatsApp's overall privacy practices, as the platform collects extensive metadata for marketing purposes. Users' phone numbers will still be required to create an account, and there will be no public username directory. Kunal Shah has been appointed as the new head of WhatsApp, succeeding Will Cathcart.
