Microsoft Edge finally lets you sign in with a Google account

Microsoft Edge has been updated to enhance compatibility with Google services, allowing users to sign in with their Google account for easier import of bookmarks and browsing history. This feature is part of a controlled rollout starting with version 150.0.4078.48 and is available for both Windows and macOS devices. Other updates include refined language for managing third-party cookie settings, Intune MAM protected downloads directing files to OneDrive, a DowngradeVersion policy for WebView2 applications, enhanced security for the "View in File Explorer" feature, and the ability for administrators to set severity thresholds for security update alerts. Additionally, the Sidebar app list has been retired.

Windows 11’s Start menu redesign is getting a redesign

Microsoft is redesigning the Windows 11 Start menu in response to user feedback about its size and layout. The new design will utilize native WinUI technology for improved performance and include a Low Latency Profile feature to optimize CPU performance. Key changes will allow users to customize the Start menu with resizing options (Large and Small modes) and the ability to hide specific sections, including the pinned section, apps list, and recommended section. These updates are currently being tested in an Insider build and are expected to be released with Windows 11 26H2 in October.

Microsoft Reveals Windows Setting to Safely Remove USB Drives and Prevent Data Loss

Removing a USB drive from a port without using the “safely remove” option is generally acceptable on many Windows computers, depending on the policy for the external device. Microsoft provides two main options for removable drives: quick removal and better performance. Under the quick removal policy, users can disconnect the device without the “Safely Remove Hardware” process, although this may reduce system performance. Since Windows 10 version 1809, quick removal has been the default policy for external devices. However, users must ensure that all operations, such as copying or formatting, are completed before removal. The better performance policy requires users to use the safe removal option to prevent data loss, as it allows write caching. Failing to do so increases the risk of data loss if the drive is disconnected while Windows is still processing writes. The highest risk of data loss occurs when the drive is removed while Windows or an application is engaged in file operations. The safe removal icon serves as a confirmation that the drive is not in use, helping to prevent accidental ejection during active processes. Users can check the flash drive policy by accessing the device properties in Disk Management. The chosen setting may persist upon reconnection to the same computer port, leading to different experiences for users with similar drives. To minimize data loss, it is recommended to wait for operations to finish and use safe removal when uncertain about the drive's status.

To enable Night Light on Windows, users can press Win + A to access Quick Settings or go through the Settings app by pressing Win + I, selecting System, then Display, and toggling the Night Light option. Third-party applications like f.lux can provide additional customization. Once activated, users can adjust the warmth using a "Strength" slider in the Night Light settings. Night Light also offers a scheduling feature to automate activation from sunset to sunrise or at specific times set by the user.

Government’s homegrown messaging app ‘NepaConnect’ appears on google play store

A government-developed messaging application named NepaConnect has been launched on the Google Play Store, aiming to provide a secure internal communications platform for state officials in Nepal. The initiative, disclosed by Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle, involves the creation of a sovereign digital infrastructure with a team of around 80 technical professionals. NepaConnect features include encrypted communication, document sharing, secure file storage, location sharing, voice messaging, document scanning, meeting scheduling, AI integration, status feeds, and ride-management services. The app is designed to centralize various workplace functions and reduce reliance on foreign communication platforms. However, details about its security standards, encryption protocols, and overall transparency remain limited. Currently, the application is in early development stages, with some features incomplete or non-functional. The future success of NepaConnect will depend on factors such as cybersecurity, user adoption, and the government's ability to encourage civil servants to switch from existing platforms.

Windows RAT Uses Encrypted HTTP C2 and Registry Persistence After npm Infection

A malware campaign targets Windows systems through a malicious npm package named postcss-minify-selector-parser, which mimics the legitimate postcss-selector-parser. This counterfeit package installs a Remote Access Trojan (RAT) on developer machines, beginning with a multi-stage attack triggered by the installation of the package. The RAT can steal credentials, execute shell commands, and communicate with a remote attacker. Security researchers at JFrog identified this threat and reported it on June 22, 2026, noting that two additional related packages, postcss-minify-selector and aes-decode-runner-pro, are linked to the same publisher and remain live on the npm registry. The RAT employs encrypted HTTP communication with a command-and-control (C2) server and ensures persistence by creating a registry key under the Windows Run key. It has capabilities for remote shell execution, file uploads and downloads, and can steal saved login data from Google Chrome using Windows decryption APIs. The malware is designed for organized batch exfiltration of stolen data. Indicators of compromise include specific IP addresses, domains, file paths, and SHA-256 hashes associated with the malware components. JFrog advises users to remove the malicious packages, inspect their dependency trees, and treat any stored credentials as compromised.

Microsoft Urges IT Admins to Prepare for Windows 11 Version 26H2 Rollout

Microsoft is preparing for the release of Windows 11 version 26H2, which aims to streamline the upgrade process for organizations. This version will be available for testing through the Windows Insider Program and utilizes a compact enablement package for a quicker transition from supported versions like 24H2 and 25H2. Devices on Windows 11 version 26H1 will not be able to upgrade to 26H2, as it is based on a different core. Upgrading to version 26H2 resets the support lifecycle, providing 24 months of support for consumer and standard business editions and 36 months for enterprise and education editions. Organizations are encouraged to test the update for compatibility and use deployment tools for a phased rollout.
