Microsoft's Copilot+ PCs, launched in May, are marketed as "the fastest, most intelligent Windows PCs ever," but users on X have challenged this claim, noting that devices with Snapdragon processors do not perform as well as high-end Intel or AMD chipsets. Critics have pointed out limitations for gamers and the lack of essential AI functionalities. Microsoft aims to capture 50% of the Windows PC market within five years, but the Copilot+ category currently represents a small fraction of laptop sales, with compatible laptops accounting for less than 10% of total shipments. While Arm chips like Snapdragon offer impressive battery life, Intel and AMD have improved their battery performance significantly. The reliance on an Arm-based processor has led to compatibility issues with certain applications and gaming titles, and some anticipated AI features are unavailable due to privacy and security concerns. Copilot+ PCs may be suitable for basic productivity tasks and web-based applications, but Intel and AMD still excel in processing power and compatibility.

Copilot+ PCs will soon support super resolution in the Photos app on Windows 11, currently being tested with Windows Insiders. This feature can enhance and enlarge images up to 8x, improving the quality of low-resolution photos and allowing for large-format prints or tight cropping without losing clarity. Additionally, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is being tested in the Photos app, enabling users to detect and copy text from images in over 160 languages. Microsoft is also expanding Copilot+ AI features to select AMD and Intel processors by the end of the year. Enhancements to the Photos app include single-click support in the Gallery, improved zoom functionality, and bug fixes for the Image creator and Restyle image features.

Microsoft announced that its Copilot+ features will be available for AMD and Intel laptops starting in November 2024, following an exclusive launch on Qualcomm devices. Any AMD and Intel PCs that meet the minimum requirements will receive these AI enhancements through free updates to Windows 11. The processors that support Copilot+ include AMD's Ryzen AI 300 and Intel's Lunar Lake, both of which have a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of at least 45 Tera Operations Per Second (TOPS). Key features of Copilot+ include Live Captions with translation, image generation tools in Microsoft Paint, AI enhancements in the Photos app, and Windows Studio Effects for video calls. The Recall feature, which tracks user activity for context-aware responses, is expected to launch for Windows Insiders in October, with a broader release planned for November. Intel's Lunar Lake NPU can achieve 50 TOPS, while AMD's Ryzen AI 300 CPUs are claimed to have the fastest NPU available.

Intel has announced its next generation of Core Ultra laptop chips, specifically the Intel Core Ultra 200V series, which will support the Microsoft Copilot+ feature. The availability of Copilot+ on Lunar Lake machines is set to begin in November 2024. AMD's Ryzen AI 300 laptops will also gain access to Copilot+ starting in the same month. First-generation Core Ultra laptops will not be compatible with Copilot+ due to insufficient NPU performance. Additionally, laptops using NVIDIA's 40 series GPUs are expected to support Copilot+, although specific timing for their integration has not been confirmed. The upcoming full rollout of Windows 11 24H2 aims to provide a more inclusive approach for existing users.

The latest optional update for Windows 11 allows users to uninstall Windows Recall, an AI-driven feature designed to enhance productivity by taking snapshots of screen activity. This decision follows privacy and security concerns regarding the unencrypted storage of captured data, leading Microsoft to delay its launch and plan testing with Windows Insiders in October 2024. The uninstallation option was included in update KB5041865, potentially region-specific, particularly in the European Union. Windows Recall will only be available on Copilot+ PCs, which must meet specific hardware requirements, currently limited to devices powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Series processors, with future compatibility expected for AMD's Ryzen AI 300 chips and Intel's Lunar Lake processors.

The Ryzen AI 300 chips showcased at Computex 2024 will not support Copilot experiences at launch. Users will have to wait for a Windows Update later in the year to access features like Paint's Cocreator, Restyle Image, and Recall. Despite the delay, users can still utilize the Ryzen AI 300's AI capabilities through third-party software like Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and Blender. Intel's Lunar Lake chips are also expected to receive Copilot+ branding later in the year.
