Many users believe that smartphones need antivirus software, similar to computers. However, most users can navigate their mobile experience without it due to built-in security features in operating systems like iOS and Android, which include regular updates, app store security, and user awareness. Antivirus apps may be necessary for users who download apps from third-party sources or engage in risky online behavior. The decision to install antivirus software should depend on individual usage patterns and risk tolerance.

Users have observed a new folder named “SecureBoot” in the Windows system folder following the installation of Windows 11's May update (KB5089549). This update may cause installation issues for some devices and introduces a directory that contains example scripts for IT professionals to manage Secure Boot certificate updates. Windows Secure Boot certificates are set to expire next month, and outdated certificates will lead to loss of support starting in June, potentially compromising Secure Boot functionality. Microsoft is distributing new certificates through Windows Update. The SecureBoot folder does not require individual users to take action, and deleting it is discouraged as it may cause complications with future Windows updates.

Beginning Thursday, Nationwide customers can conceal payment references on incoming bank transfers within the app. This feature aims to help prevent abusers from using banking systems to maintain unwanted contact and control over survivors. Domestic abuse charities have raised concerns about payment references being used for harassment, with some abusers sending messages or threats through these references. Nationwide's initiative empowers customers to control what is visible in their accounts. Approximately 4.2 million women in the UK have experienced economic abuse, which can include controlling bank accounts and monitoring financial activity. Nationwide's vulnerability support team assisted 312 customers facing abuse in 2025, an increase from 213 the previous year. The organization has also established “safe spaces” in hundreds of branches for domestic abuse support. Campaigners urge other banks to assess how banking features might be exploited by abusers, and Nationwide is considering extending similar functionalities to Virgin Money customers in the future.

Avast Free Antivirus is a free security application that provides essential malware protection and additional tools for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. It blocks malware and suspicious websites using real-time scanning and integrates with the operating system's security center on Windows. Key features include file shield scanning, web and mail shields, and ransomware-related shields on select platforms. It is available for free download in the US and is popular among home users, families, students, and individual professionals. Avast competes with other antivirus vendors like McAfee and Bitdefender and is often reviewed positively by tech outlets. While it offers core protections, advanced features require paid subscriptions. Users can conduct various types of scans and utilize browser extensions to assess site safety. The software is designed to coexist with Windows built-in security features, but experts advise using additional security measures for online banking and shopping.
