It’s Not Gone: The Feature Android Auto Users Love Is Still There, Google Says

The wavy progress bar in Android Auto's music applications has disappeared for some users, leading to speculation about its permanent removal. Google clarified that the squiggly line has not been eliminated, attributing the inconsistency to app developers' ability to customize the progress bar's appearance. Users have observed that the wavy progress bar may appear in the Coolwalk screen but reverts to a standard straight line in full-screen mode. Additionally, any app capable of playing media now utilizes a dedicated card on the Coolwalk screen, allowing users to see song information and playback controls. This feature is live on production devices with the latest updates of Android Auto.

Google redesigns the search bar in its Android app

Google has updated the search bar on the home screen of its Android app in version 17.65.17, introducing a new "plus" button for easier access to file uploads and AI tools. The redesigned search bar is slimmer with a white background, a border, and a shadow effect. The plus icon on the left allows users to attach images or files, create visuals with Nano Banana, or switch models in AI Mode, while the microphone and Google Lens icons remain on the right. The two shortcut buttons beneath the search bar now have text labels: "Create" for Nano Banana and "Talk" for Search Live, improving usability. The update is being rolled out broadly, but no specific timeline has been provided for when users in the UAE will receive it. Users need to update the app to version 17.65.17 to access the new search bar, and the plus button does not add new features but provides quicker access to existing ones.

A week with Googlebooks: four notes from our testing so far

Google has launched five new Googlebook laptops featuring the Googlebook OS, which has received mixed reviews. While the hardware is praised, the software is criticized for being problematic and not a significant upgrade from ChromeOS. Users report issues such as the inability to run Chrome with separate Google accounts, clunky Android apps, and awkward command requirements for messaging apps. The app ecosystem is struggling, with many applications failing to adapt to the Googlebook's interface, resulting in a frustrating user experience. Linux applications face integration challenges, complicating multitasking. Despite some successful features like file transfer and notification responses between Googlebook and Android devices, users experience frequent connectivity issues and sluggish performance.

This App Wants to Make Your Android Handhelds Last Even Longer

Battery life is a significant concern for Android handheld device users, prompting some to use custom firmware while others prefer stock Android. Strategies to extend battery life exist but vary in effectiveness and effort required. SleepManager is an application designed to optimize battery usage during inactivity by automatically disabling Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, activating Battery Saver, managing specific applications, scheduling syncs, and preventing clamshell devices from waking inadvertently. It is accessible without rooting or complex commands, allowing users to download and configure it easily. The developer noted that SleepManager was created using AI-assisted development, which has sparked discussions about AI's role in app creation.

Windows 11 annual update is boring, but staying on 24H2 is a security risk

Microsoft has released Windows 11 26H2 as a low-disruption update that activates existing features for users who have kept up with monthly updates. Users on version 24H2 should upgrade soon, as support will end on October 13, 2026, and they will no longer receive security patches. I might finally have gone too far with a GTA 5 mod that imports most of Doom 2

A mod named Doom 2 in GTA 5 Hell On Earth (D2IGTA5HOE) merges elements of Doom 2 with Grand Theft Auto 5, allowing players to switch from third-person to first-person perspective using the F9 key. Players can engage in combat in Los Santos with weapons from the Doom franchise, such as a minigun and BFG, while activating Hell On Earth mode with the F10 key introduces Doom 2 enemies. The gameplay features include battling demons and armed furries, with additional features like flossing and Superman mode also triggered by the F10 key, which can clutter the screen.

Googlebook Phone Pairing Update Rolls Out Android 17 Pixels

Google has identified a first-time setup timing issue that caused connectivity problems for users pairing their phones with new Googlebook laptops. This issue is not related to hardware malfunctions. A fix is being rolled out via a Google Play Services app update, which began this week, addressing the setup sequence and ensuring the QR code clears correctly for phone recognition. Supported devices running Android 17 can pair successfully, but some users may still experience issues if the update hasn't reached their devices. Samsung Galaxy phones, including the latest models, are not yet compatible, and a fix for these devices is expected in the coming weeks. The update is free and delivered through Google Play Services.
