Microsoft is removing the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) from Windows 11 to enhance security by eliminating a tool that has been exploited by malware and ransomware. WMIC will not be included in Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2, with complete removal scheduled for the August 2026 Patch Tuesday update. The decision to remove WMIC is based on the availability of more secure alternatives like PowerShell. WMIC has been a vector for attacks, allowing threat actors to disable antivirus solutions and access sensitive data. Microsoft has phased out WMIC since 2021, encouraging users to transition to modern tools while continuing to support the underlying Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) infrastructure.

The relevance of third-party antivirus software for mobile devices has declined as modern Android devices come with robust built-in security features. Google Play Protect blocks millions of harmful apps and conducts regular scans of installed apps. Android employs sandboxing technology to isolate applications, has a proactive permissions system, and provides regular security updates. While Android is not immune to malware, many threats now arise from social engineering tactics rather than technical vulnerabilities. Users face risks when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks, and malicious push notifications can mislead them. Third-party antivirus may be beneficial for users who sideload apps or notice signs of infection, but for most users, Google's Play Protect suffices. Older devices lacking updates are at higher risk, and while antivirus apps can provide additional protection, education and user vigilance are crucial for minimizing risk.

Google has introduced the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 update, featuring a new "App Lock" option for enhanced security on Pixel devices. Users can activate App Lock by long-pressing an app icon and selecting the option from the menu. This feature requires a fingerprint, facial recognition, or a designated pattern to access locked apps, adding a layer of protection for personal data. When enabled, notifications from locked apps are hidden, and associated widgets or shortcuts are removed from view. Users can manage App Lock settings within the settings menu, allowing them to toggle the feature on or off for individual apps.
