Microsoft has warned IT administrators about a significant issue affecting Windows Server 2025 domain controllers, which may struggle to manage network traffic after a system restart. This problem arises because the domain controllers revert to the standard firewall profile instead of the required domain firewall profile, leading to potential inaccessibility on the domain network, application failures, and open ports that could pose security risks. The issue specifically affects Windows Server 2025 systems with the Active Directory Domain Services role, while client systems and earlier server versions remain unaffected. To address this, Microsoft recommends a temporary workaround: manually restarting the network adapter using PowerShell with the command Restart-NetAdapter * after each reboot. Administrators are advised to create a scheduled task for automation, monitor domain controllers for disruptions, and minimize unnecessary restarts. Microsoft is working on a permanent fix, with an update expected in the future.

The messaging app Telegram has been blocked in Russia's Dagestan and Chechnya regions due to security concerns, as announced by Dagestan's digital development minister, Yuri Gamzatov. The decision followed recommendations from law enforcement agencies, particularly in response to unrest at Makhachkala airport earlier this year. Since early 2024, users in parts of the North Caucasus have faced service disruptions on Telegram, and Gamzatov suggested considering the VK messenger as an alternative. The unrest at Makhachkala airport on October 29, 2023, was caused by a flight arrival from Israel, leading to mass riots that resulted in over 24 million rubles in damages and injuries to 23 officials.

Users worldwide are experiencing significant disruptions with Facebook Messenger, starting around 10:30 AM ET, affecting regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, South America, and Asia. Facebook Messenger has about one billion users as of early 2025. Meta's other messaging platform, WhatsApp, faced similar issues during this outage, with over 8,200 complaints logged on Downdetector in the United States. This incident is reminiscent of a previous outage four years ago that lasted seven hours and resulted in a significant revenue loss, attributed to a faulty update. During that outage, access systems at Facebook's Menlo Park campus were also disrupted. The current situation has led to user frustration and raised concerns about the reliability of major tech firms' infrastructure.

February 2025 Patch Tuesday has resulted in a significant update from Microsoft addressing 56 vulnerabilities, including two critical zero-day exploits: CVE-2025-21418 and CVE-2025-21391. CVE-2025-21418 is a vulnerability in the Windows Ancillary Function Driver (AFD.sys) that allows attackers to elevate their privileges on the target system. It requires an authenticated user to run a specially-crafted program that executes code with SYSTEM privileges. Since 2022, there have been nine elevation of privilege vulnerabilities associated with AFD.sys, with one previously exploited as a zero-day. The North Korean APT group, Lazarus Group, previously leveraged a related vulnerability (CVE-2024-38193) to implant a rootkit. CVE-2025-21391 affects Windows Storage across various Windows and Windows Server versions, allowing attackers to delete targeted files and potentially escalate privileges. This vulnerability is noted as the first time the technique has been exploited in the wild. Both zero-days are included in CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Other vulnerabilities addressed include CVE-2025-21194, a security feature bypass affecting Microsoft Surface laptops, and CVE-2025-21377, an NTLMv2 hash disclosure vulnerability that could enable unauthorized authentication. CVE-2025-21376 is a critical remote code execution vulnerability that could be exploited by unauthenticated attackers through crafted requests to vulnerable LDAP servers, with Microsoft indicating that exploitation is likely.

The Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media, along with Roskomnadzor, is considering imposing restrictions on voice calls made through messaging applications due to a rise in fraudulent activities. Two scenarios being evaluated include blocking voice traffic from abroad and a complete ban on voice calls within these apps. Roskomnadzor has acknowledged its authority to restrict such calls if they violate Russian law but the Ministry has stated it is not currently drafting regulations for this purpose. Fraudulent calls via messaging apps have surged to about 40% of total traffic, up from 1% three years ago. MegaFon, Russia's second-largest mobile operator, has stated it lacks the technical capabilities to analyze calls from these apps and suggests that additional software on users' smartphones is the only effective way to mitigate fraudulent calls.
