Microsoft is piloting new features in Windows 11, focusing on file sharing and search functionalities as part of the Windows Insider program. A notable enhancement is a drag tray that simplifies file sharing by allowing users to drag files to the top of the screen, revealing frequently used applications for easy transfer. Users can also access a "More" button to open the Windows share menu for additional options. Additionally, the Windows Search functionality is being improved for Copilot+ PCs, enabling users to find cloud-stored photos using descriptive terms, currently available for personal OneDrive accounts with plans to support third-party cloud storage in the future. To try these features, users must enroll in the Windows Insider program and ensure hardware compatibility with the beta version. They can register on the Microsoft website and follow prompts to join. Participation involves installing beta software, which may lead to potential issues, so backing up data is recommended. Users can experience the drag tray and new Start menu views by selecting the beta channel and updating to Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.4950 (KB5052078). The enhanced search feature is available through Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3291 (KB5052080) for Copilot+ PCs, which is currently an optional update but will be promoted to recommended status later this year. The update also includes improvements to Windows Recall and a new Trim tool for editing screen recordings using the Snipping Tool.

URLCheck is an open-source application for Android that enhances link management by intercepting links before they are followed, allowing users to view, modify, or disregard them. It integrates with the VirusTotal API for threat checking, although users must sign up to use this feature. The app removes tracking tags and unnecessary redirects when sharing links. To set up URLCheck, users need to download it, select it as the default browser, and enable preferred modules. While URLCheck improves security, it does not guarantee complete safety online and requires users to exercise caution. The app only intercepts links from applications that redirect to a browser, and users must use the share menu to check URLs within their browser.

Version 44.1 of the Google Play Store has removed the "Share apps" feature, which allowed users to share installed applications via Nearby Share. This feature was introduced in early 2021 and enabled app transfers without internet or mobile data usage. The change was noted by 9to5Google in the official changelog, and while Google has not commented on the removal, there are speculations about security concerns related to potential malware distribution. Users can still share apps using Files by Google or third-party file sharing applications.

Microsoft has updated its Link to Windows app to improve file sharing between Android devices and Windows PCs. The new version allows users to see their Windows PCs directly on the Android share sheet, facilitating easier file transfers without navigating through the “send to PC” menu. Users can now select a file, tap the share button, and choose “Link to Windows [Send to PC]” to wirelessly send files to their connected Windows PCs, which are stored in the “Phone Link” directory within the Downloads folder. The update utilizes the Android API for Direct Share targets, enabling quicker access to frequently used Windows PCs. Users need at least version 1.24032.518.0 on their Android devices and version 1.24032.156.0 on their Windows PCs for this feature. Microsoft has introduced a Nearby Share feature for Windows that allows users to share files between PCs and Android devices easily. This feature utilizes Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and appears in the native share menu when files are selected, requiring the Phone Link application for connection. Unlike Google's Quick Share tool, Nearby Share operates in a separate window. To use it, users must establish a connection through Phone Link, download the "Link to Windows" app, and then select files to share. The feature is currently in testing for Windows 10 and 11 users in the Windows Insider program, with plans for a wider release.
