Firaxis is promoting this update as significant, although the game has received a 'Mixed' rating on Steam due to critiques of its age transition system and user experience issues. Despite this, Civilization 7 has been commercially successful for Firaxis, with CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledging its profitability while noting that the Age system may not have been well executed.

The upcoming Test of Time update, launching on May 19, will be a comprehensive, free overhaul based on player feedback. Key features include the introduction of "time-tested Civs," allowing players to maintain their civilization across ages, a revamped victory system with dynamic conditions, optional side objectives for various playstyles, updated map generation techniques, user interface improvements, balance changes, and a complimentary leader for all players.

Civilization 7 is currently available at a 40% discount on Fanatical, priced at .99/£35.99. It introduces a new Age system that segments gameplay into three phases and requires players to choose a leader to guide them while swapping civilizations. A free Test of Time update is set to be released this Spring, allowing players to maintain a single civilization throughout their journey and revamping Victory conditions with a new system called Triumphs. The update will focus on four key areas: Military, Economy, Culture, and Science. The current deal is available until February 26, 2026.

Civilization 7’s new initiative lets you test features before they go live, including the one you’ve all been asking for

Firaxis is launching the Firaxis Feature Workshop to enhance player engagement and satisfaction for Civilization 7 by incorporating community feedback. The studio is developing a mode that allows players to guide a single civilization through all three ages, responding to player criticism of the current gameplay. Creative Director Ed Beach mentioned that they are playtesting this feature and inviting community members to help refine it. Following the recent patch 1.3.0, which included a naval rework and new civilizations, the team will focus on larger features like the single-civ mode and the Workshop, with plans for smaller, less frequent updates. Early participants in the Workshop will test upcoming changes to Legacy Paths and Victories. Applications to join the Workshop are currently open, and successful applicants will have access to a private Discord server for feedback.
