Losing an Android phone can be distressing, and while Google’s Find Hub is useful, it's not foolproof. To improve recovery chances, users can integrate Samsung’s SmartThings Find service and utilize Samsung Routines. A user on the r/SamsungGalaxy subreddit demonstrated a setup where the phone adjusts settings upon receiving a text with a specific phrase, like “lost phone.” The phone will activate Wi-Fi and mobile data, increase volume to maximum, and enable location access. To set this up on a Samsung phone, follow these steps: 1. Open the Modes and Routines app. 2. Tap the plus icon (+). 3. Select "Add what will trigger this routine." 4. Choose "Notification received" under the Event section. 5. Select "Messages" and enter a specific keyword (e.g., “lost phone”). 6. Define actions for the routine, such as turning on Wi-Fi, mobile data, setting sound mode to “Sound” at maximum volume, enabling location, and activating the flashlight. This configuration enhances the phone's discoverability when the designated text is received, serving as a supplementary measure alongside other recovery tools.

The Xiaomi Home app had the highest number of permission requests at 91, followed by Samsung SmartThings with 82, Facebook with 69, and WhatsApp with 66. While some permissions are necessary for functionality, the excessive requests raise concerns about digital surveillance. TikTok faced scrutiny for its audio recording and device file access requests, while Temu was criticized for excessive promotional emails linked to its location access. Amazon defended its camera access requests as enhancing user experience, and Meta stated that its apps do not use the microphone without user involvement. The investigation highlights the trade-off between free services and the collection of personal data.

Samsung's Now Bar feature, initially introduced with the Galaxy S25 series, has expanded to the cover screen of the Galaxy Z Flip with the One UI 8 update. As of June 2025, it supports approximately 20 applications, including those from Samsung, Google, and third-party developers, with plans to increase this number to 35 by the end of 2025. The expansion is enabled by a new API in One UI 8 based on Android 16, allowing applications to create “Live Notifications.” Current compatible applications include various Samsung apps (e.g., Media Player, Notes, SmartThings TV Remote), Google apps (e.g., Google Maps), and third-party apps (e.g., Uber, Waymo). Samsung's documentation lists 19 specific applications but suggests a 20th app is forthcoming.
