Google introduced the Material 3 Expressive update to its dialer app, changing the layout, design, and functionality of the Phone app for Android users. The home page now combines the ‘Favourites’ and ‘Recents’ sections, and the dialer icon has been moved to the bottom menu. Users must use the search bar or the ‘View contacts’ option to access saved contacts. The method for accepting calls has changed from a tap to a sliding gesture, which has upset many users. There is no straightforward option to revert to the old design, but users can uninstall the update or enable a single-tap option in settings. To uninstall, users can go to the Google Play Store, search for Phone by Google, disable auto-update, and then uninstall the app. To change the incoming call gesture back to a tap, users can access Settings in the Phone app and select ‘Single tap’ under Incoming call gesture.

Phison Electronics has issued a statement addressing misinformation related to a Windows 11 update affecting solid-state drives (SSDs) with Phison controllers. The company clarified that fraudulent documents misattributed to them exaggerate issues and make unfounded claims about data safety. Phison plans to pursue legal action against those spreading this misinformation. Key points include that the falsified document is not from Phison, it inaccurately claims potential storage issues from the Windows Security Updates released on August 12, 2025, and that Phison is working with Microsoft and other partners to ensure accurate communication. The company reminded customers to refer to reputable sources for official information.

Updating the Linux kernel is generally straightforward and low-risk, similar to Windows updates. Most Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, and Linux Mint, manage kernel updates automatically through the package manager. When a new kernel is installed, the previous version remains intact, allowing users to revert to it if necessary via the GRUB boot menu. Kernel updates provide essential security patches, bug fixes, and improved hardware support. While manual installation of a kernel is possible, it is not required for most users. Tools are available for easier management of kernel versions, but the update process is designed to be user-friendly and safe.

Microsoft is introducing a new feature called Adaptive Energy Saver for Windows 11, which will automatically toggle Energy Saver mode based on user activity to maximize battery efficiency. Currently, users must manually activate Energy Saver mode, which reduces display brightness and curtails background activities. The Adaptive Energy Saver feature, currently being tested by Windows Insiders, will maintain screen brightness while managing power-intensive components like the CPU and GPU during lighter tasks. This feature is exclusive to devices with built-in batteries and is expected to be rolled out to the wider public later this year. Users can access it through Settings > System > Power & Battery once available.

A technique for Android devices called TapTrap allows malicious applications to intercept user taps without requiring special permissions. It uses transparent screen transitions to mislead users into triggering hidden actions. Devices running Android versions 15 and 16 are particularly vulnerable. TapTrap operates by overlaying a nearly transparent screen on top of another application, making it appear as if users are interacting with one app while their taps are registered by the hidden screen. A study of around 100,000 Android applications revealed that approximately 76 percent contained screens vulnerable to TapTrap. The researchers successfully executed the attack on a Google Pixel 8a running Android 16. Google has acknowledged the issue and plans to include a fix in a future software update, but no specific timeline has been provided. Users can enhance their security by disabling animations in their system settings.

Google has begun rolling out the July 2025 update for Android 16, specifically for Pixel devices, with the build number BP2A.250705.008. This over-the-air (OTA) update focuses on bug fixes and performance enhancements, particularly for network connectivity and app rendering. The Pixel 6a is now part of the Google Battery Performance Programme, which aims to improve battery longevity and safety by introducing background controls that limit charging speed and capacity after around 400 charge cycles. Users may qualify for free repairs, partial refunds, or trade-in bonuses for battery-related issues. The Pixel 9 and Pixel 8 series receive performance enhancements, especially in app visuals and Wi-Fi stability. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series see general stability improvements, while the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold experience app optimization for display orientation. Notably, the update does not include the July Android security patch or a list of Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs). The update is available for the Google Pixel 9, 8, 7, 6, 6a, Fold, and Tablet.
