Microsoft has introduced a new feature called "Microsoft 365 Companions" during the Microsoft Ignite 2024 event. This feature integrates shortcuts for People, Files, and Calendar into the taskbar for Windows users, aimed at improving productivity and user experience. It allows users to customize their taskbar for quicker access to important contacts and deadlines. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance Windows 11 as a productive environment. Earlier in the year, Microsoft also launched customizable Start Menu Companions to further promote personalization and efficiency.

Microsoft has introduced Start Menu Companions in Windows 11, allowing third-party apps to customize the Start Menu by declaring themselves as companions in the app's manifest. The core technology behind Start Menu Companions is Adaptive Cards, which allows for UI updates through JSON files. However, there are limitations such as only being able to see two companions at once and the rendering of companions being done by the shell instead of the app. To create a Start Menu Companion, developers can use a sample repository on GitHub and follow specific steps to enable the feature and deploy the companion.

Windows 11 is introducing Start Menu Companions, which are like plugins or extensions that enrich the Start menu experience by providing snippets of information such as weather updates and stock prices in a floating panel next to the Start menu. These companions aim to seamlessly integrate useful information into the user's workflow without disrupting the desktop ecosystem.
