My biggest pleasant surprise of 2025 so far has been the free prequel to one of my favorite indie RPGs, made with FromSoft’s 25-year-old game making toolset

Lunacid, a first-person RPG inspired by the King's Field series, was released in 2023 by Kira LLC. A prequel titled Lunacid: Tears of the Moon is set thousands of years before the original game and was developed using the Sword of Moonlight toolset. The game features user-generated dungeon crawlers and has drawn comparisons to atmospheric exploration titles like Thief and System Shock. Players engage in melee combat without blocking or dodging options, and character progression occurs automatically upon leveling up. Mana regenerates through successful melee attacks, and health is fully restored at the home base. The game lacks a tutorial, prompting players to refer to a classic-style manual. Players must locate five shards of a legendary sword while navigating a world filled with secrets, including hidden doors and challenging enemies.

Key changes in the patch notes include: - Various crash fixes and stability improvements. - Temporarily removed Anti-Lag 2 to improve stability on AMD graphics cards. - Fixed a crash in the final Mysterio mission while wearing the Bodega Cat Suit. - Fixed a crash when closing the menu while an audio fragment is playing. - Improved adjustability of Mouse Sensitivity. - Improved screen space reflections. - Fixed a bug causing character eyes to appear darkened or flickering. - Nintendo Switch Pro controllers can now be used with Steam Input. - Resolved a New Game+ bug related to the Sleeping Dart prompt. - NVIDIA DLSS Ray Reconstruction can now be used at Native resolution and with Ultra Performance upscaling. - Fixed a bug with XeGTAO when disabling Anti-Aliasing or enabling Ray Reconstruction. - Resolved a timing-related bug during the Wind Tunnel tutorial. - Various user interface-related bug fixes. - Various visual bug fixes. Half-Life 2 gets a major 20th Anniversary Update and bundles Lost Coast with episodes —the game is now free on Steam until November 18

Half-Life 2 celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a comprehensive update on Steam, introducing free content including elements from the Lost Coast expansion and Episodes One and Two until November 18. The Orange Box bundle, which includes these titles along with Portal and Team Fortress 2, is available for .99 until November 22. Most mod support for Half-Life 2 is now integrated into the main game, and standalone store pages for expansions have been delisted. The update features a complete visual overhaul, enhancing graphics to match Lost Coast's fidelity, and introduces a new High Quality mode for improved model rendering and shadow effects. User interface improvements include compatibility with modern controllers and three and a half hours of developer commentary added to Half-Life 2.

First Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered PC Patch brings performance and stability improvements

God of War Ragnarök (PC) Review – CGMagazine

God of War Ragnarök has been released on PC by Jetpack Interactive, expanding the franchise beyond its 2018 predecessor. Controller usage has tripled since 2018, with Xbox controllers being the most popular. Valve has made significant improvements to enhance controller support on Steam, including updates to Big Picture Mode, controller configuration, gyro aiming functionality, and better driver support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers. The Hori Steam Controller, now known as the Horipad for Steam, is only available in Japan. Valve's recent release of the Steam Deck Top Played list showcases their focus on the console market. Games like the Kingdom Hearts series have seen success on Steam, with KH 1.5+2.5 HD ReMix making it to the Top 10 Most Played on Steam Deck.
