Microsoft plans to automatically activate Memory Integrity on a broader range of eligible systems starting October 2026, rolling it out through standard Windows quality updates. Prior to activation, Windows will assess hardware, drivers, and performance to ensure compatibility. Memory Integrity, part of Virtualization-based Security (VBS), uses the Windows hypervisor to create a secure environment for integrity checks on kernel code. Compatibility with drivers is crucial, as many older applications may not meet the stricter standards required for HVCI. Potential compatibility issues may arise with anti-cheat solutions, third-party input methods, and banking protection programs, which could lead to software malfunctions or boot failures. A readiness check will evaluate hardware compatibility, with eligible systems including Intel processors from the 8th generation, AMD processors from Zen 2, and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8180 or newer, along with specific RAM and storage requirements. The rollout will be gradual, and users who previously disabled HVCI will not face unexpected reactivation. Microsoft recommends updating affected applications or drivers in case of compatibility issues.

A team of Minecraft enthusiasts has mapped the entire 2b2t server, resulting in a 15TB compressed download that can expand to an 80TB archive. The project, known as the 2b2tplace preservation initiative, began in 2024 and concluded in April 2026 after 22 months of work using 28 bot accounts to map over one million blocks across the Overworld, Nether, and End dimensions. The team developed a custom compression format (.zvcr) to achieve an 81.25% space savings, allowing the data to be stored more efficiently. The 2b2t server, which has been operational since 2010, is known for its lack of rules and moderation, fostering a unique anarchic environment. Despite preservation efforts, concerns exist among players about the server drifting from its original spirit.

Microsoft is testing a recovery feature for Windows 11 called Point-in-Time Restore, which offers a more extensive system snapshot than the traditional System Restore. It was first introduced in the Windows 11 Insider Experimental preview on April 24, 2026. The feature aims to minimize downtime and simplify troubleshooting and can be accessed through the Windows Recovery Environment and the Windows Settings app. Point-in-Time Restore backs up a broader range of data compared to System Restore, including user files, applications, settings, passwords, secrets, certificates, and keys. It restores the entire PC to a previous state, losing any local changes made after the snapshot. The feature operates on an automated schedule, with snapshots retained for up to 72 hours, and users can create new snapshots at specified intervals. For optimal use, Point-in-Time Restore is enabled by default on PCs with at least 200GB of drive space, with a storage cap of 2% of total drive capacity. It remains optional for consumer versions of Windows. A specialized version for Windows 365 Enterprise cloud PCs is always active, retains restore points for up to a month, and uses scalable cloud storage. Remote management support for Point-in-Time Restore is under development and not yet available. Currently, it is limited to builds within the Windows 11 Insider Experimental channel, with broader availability details pending.

The introduction of Checkpoint Cumulative Updates aims to reduce this growth by establishing periodic baselines, but the effectiveness has been mixed. The May 2025 cumulative update saw a size increase from approximately 6.5GB to nearly 9GB, with new MSIX files related to semantic search and on-device AI contributing to this growth. Windows Update uses applicability logic to minimize download sizes for users, but enterprises must download full packages, resulting in increased storage costs. The average yearly storage cost for enterprises rose from about 11 GB in 2024 to 52 GB by 2026. Users can check their actual download sizes through the Windows Update settings and Event Viewer logs.
