A New Start Menu and More Major Upgrades Are Coming to Windows 11

Microsoft announced significant upgrades for Windows 11, including enhancements to the Start menu, Copilot AI, and utilities like Paint and the Snipping Tool. The Photos app will introduce a relight feature for dynamic lighting control. Paint will gain capabilities for creating custom stickers from text prompts and an AI-powered object select tool. The Snipping Tool will receive enhancements like intelligent screenshot cropping, text extraction, and a color picker. The Narrator on Copilot+ PCs will be upgraded to provide rich descriptions of images.

Google Drive for Android could soon get Gemini-powered features (APK teardown)

Google Drive will introduce Gemini-powered features on the web to enhance user experience and productivity, allowing users to summarize files and folders, engage in discussions, retrieve quick facts, and create new images or files. These features are not yet available on the Google Drive app for Android, but an APK teardown of version 2.25.170.0 indicates that they may soon be integrated into the mobile app. Some features enabled in the latest release include summarizing folders, responding to inquiries, and assisting with writing tasks, while advanced functionalities like summarizing specific files and creating new images are still pending. The rollout of these features may occur in phases, with further enhancements expected in future updates.

Microsoft Paint has a new Copilot hub, and it’s now rolling out on Windows 11 for everyone

In January 2025, Microsoft began rolling out Paint's Generative Erase feature, followed by the Image Creator in February. These features have been consolidated under a new "Copilot" hub button in the Paint toolbar, available to all Windows 11 users without needing to join the Insider program. Upon updating Paint, users will find the Image Creator shortcut replaced by the Copilot button, which offers three options: Image Creator, Generative Erase, and Background Removal. A fourth feature, "Cocreator," is available only on devices with NPU-based processors and allows users to turn sketches into polished artwork. The Image Creator enables users to generate images through generative AI by describing the desired artwork and selecting from various artistic styles, including Charcoal, Ink Sketch, Watercolor, Oil Painting, Digital Art, Photorealistic, Anime, and Pixel Art. Users can save or copy the generated images, but a Microsoft account and AI usage credits are required. The Generative Erase feature allows users to remove objects from images by drawing over the area to be erased. The background removal option lets users eliminate backgrounds from images and save the results as transparent PNGs. The introduction of the Copilot menu enhances accessibility to these tools for all Windows 11 users.

The official ChatGPT Android app may have just leaked the GPT-4.5 launch early

GPT-4.5 is expected to be the last standalone model from OpenAI, with future iterations integrating all existing models. Gemini in Gmail for Android is borrowing this handy shortcut from the web version (APK teardown)

The Gmail app is set to enhance the Gemini panel by introducing an Insert shortcut for AI-generated replies, simplifying the process of incorporating these responses into email drafts. Currently, the Gemini panel allows users to summarize email threads, retrieve information from past emails, view and add events to Google Calendar, and draft responses with AI assistance. The new Insert button, represented by an arrow icon, will enable users to paste generated text directly into drafts with a single tap. This feature was discovered in an APK teardown of the latest Gmail build (2024.11.24.702067492.Release), although it is not yet functional and has caused app crashes. The Insert button already exists in the web version of Gmail, but there has been confusion regarding its availability on mobile platforms.
