Russian mobile carriers to make access to Kremlin-backed Max messenger free

Mobile carriers in Russia—MTS, Beeline, MegaFon, and T2—will no longer charge data fees for the Max messenger application, effective August 1. Users can utilize Max without using their mobile data allowances, even if their data packages are exhausted. This agreement, confirmed by the Digital Development Ministry and VK, the parent company of Max, allows for zero-rated traffic for the app when connected to the carrier's home network. However, the Max messenger was recently removed from the App Store due to international sanctions, and Google also removed it from its app store following EU sanctions on VK and its subsidiary.

Bethesda Has a New Logo to Celebrate Its 40th Anniversary — and It Harkens Back to the Studio’s Old Terminator

Bethesda has introduced a new logo to celebrate its 40th anniversary, reflecting on its history and hinting at future projects. The studio has a legacy that includes significant titles such as The Elder Scrolls: Arena (1994) and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall (1996), as well as several games in The Terminator franchise, including The Terminator: Future Shock (1995) and Skynet (1996). The Elder Scrolls 6 is projected for release in 2028, and Bethesda is also working on Fallout 5, remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, an upcoming Fallout title from Obsidian, additional DLC for Starfield, and ongoing enhancements for Fallout 76. The new logo does not indicate a revival of The Terminator games.

Minecraft’s system requirements are being raised for the first time in 17 years.

Mojang Studios has updated the system requirements for Minecraft: Java Edition for the first time in 17 years. The recommended memory requirement has increased from 4GB to 16GB. The new minimum requirements for Full HD resolution (1920x1080) at 30 frames per second (fps) include a CPU with four or more cores, a GPU supporting Vulkan 1.3 with at least 2GB of VRAM, and 8GB of memory for dedicated GPUs or 12GB for integrated GPUs. The recommended specifications for 60fps with 'Fancy' graphics settings include 16GB of RAM and 6GB or more of VRAM, with suggested GPUs like the GeForce RTX 2060 or Radeon RX 5600 XT. The old and new requirements show significant increases in memory and processing power, with the new minimum requirements including Windows 10 or 11, macOS 12 or later, and various CPU and GPU specifications. While systems not meeting the new minimum can still run the game, performance may vary, and future updates may affect compatibility. The update is part of a transition to Vulkan technology for improved performance and functionality.

Centre bans Bitchat app used during internet curbs; cites security risks

The Indian government has instructed GitHub to remove the Bluetooth-based messaging application Bitchat due to concerns about its potential misuse for anti-national activities, including terrorism and cybercrime. The directive was issued by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which noted that Bitchat's decentralized communication through Bluetooth mesh networks hinders lawful interception and investigations by law enforcement agencies. The lack of a centralized service provider complicates the ability to trace communications and gather data for investigations.

Amazon walks back comments about taking 007 off of IO, but does say ‘anything’s possible’ when it comes to buying the studio outright

Jeff Gattis, general manager of Amazon Gaming, hinted at the future of the 007 franchise, suggesting that sequels might be developed by MGM and potentially by Amazon Game Studios. He clarified that no decisions have been made regarding the publisher or developer for the next Bond sequel and acknowledged the success of IO Interactive's current game, indicating that it would be prudent for IO Interactive to continue as the developer. Gattis mentioned that while anything is possible regarding Amazon acquiring IO Interactive, there are currently no discussions about that.

VK and Max messenger removed from Google Play store

VK's core applications, including the VK social network and Max messenger, have been removed from the Google Play store and previously from the Apple App Store. Users searching for these apps will find them absent, and this may be linked to recent international sanctions. VK's press service stated that users who have the apps installed will not experience disruptions, and all features and security systems will remain stable. Users are encouraged to download the apps from alternative platforms, such as RuStore, Huawei AppGallery, Samsung Galaxy Store, and Xiaomi GetApps. Additionally, the Odnoklassniki social network application has also disappeared from the Google Play store. The European Union has imposed sanctions against VK and its subsidiary, "Kommunikatsionnaya platforma," which is linked to the removal of these applications from major tech platforms.

Google Play removes Max, Russia’s Kremlin-backed messenger, and VKontakte, VK’s flagship social network — three days after the EU sanctioned VK, their parent company

VK announced on July 16 that its Max messenger and VKontakte applications have been removed from the Google Play app store, along with the Odnoklassniki app. Users can still access these apps through alternative platforms like RuStore, Huawei AppGallery, Samsung Galaxy Store, and Xiaomi GetApps, and functionality will remain uninterrupted for those who have already installed them. VKontakte users are receiving notifications about a transition from the .com domain to .ru, assuring them of the platform's reliability. This change follows sanctions imposed by the European Union on July 13 against VK and its subsidiary, Kommunikatsionnaya Platforma. In late June, the Max messenger and VK social network app, along with Mail.ru’s email applications, were also removed from the App Store, with Odnoklassniki becoming unavailable at that time.

Russia’s Max Messenger Removed From Google Play

Max, a messaging application launched by VK in 2025 and endorsed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, was removed from Google’s Play marketplace on July 16, 2023. The app does not provide end-to-end encryption, raising concerns about government access to user communications. This removal is part of a trend affecting other VK-owned applications, coinciding with recent EU sanctions targeting VK Company and its subsidiary Communication Platform LLC, which oversees the Max app. The EU characterized Max as having extensive surveillance features used against critics of Russia's military actions in Ukraine. Apple also removed Max from its App Store in June without explanation. Max aims to be an all-encompassing platform for messaging, social media, digital identification, payments, banking, and government services, which critics say could enhance government monitoring of citizens. The Russian government has implemented strict measures against foreign social media platforms and previously enacted a ban on Telegram in 2026, which faced public backlash.

Epic Games Store boss quits after 8 years to take up new role at Saber Interactive

Steve Allison has left his position as vice president and general manager of the Epic Games Store after eight years to become the chief business officer at Saber Interactive. He praised Saber Interactive's founders and their ability to create high-quality games cost-effectively, mentioning upcoming titles like Space Marine 3, Jurassic Park, Turok, Hellraiser, and a new John Wick game, along with several unannounced projects. During his tenure at Epic Games, Allison helped launch the Epic Games Store in 2018, which now has 78 million monthly active users, largely due to the strategy of offering free games. The Epic Games Store competes with Steam, which is estimated to have around 200 million monthly active users. Saber Interactive, founded in 2001, gained recognition for its work on Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and was acquired by Embracer in 2020, later being sold to a company owned by Karch for 7 million.

EU sanctions target Russian state-backed messaging app

Moscow is promoting Max, a super-app that consolidates various digital services, while cracking down on messaging platforms WhatsApp and Telegram. The Russian government has required civil servants and state-owned enterprises to use Max for communications. The EU has imposed sanctions on VK, the media conglomerate behind Max, due to concerns that the app is monitored by the FSB and has surveillance capabilities that suppress dissent regarding Russia's actions in Ukraine. Max, which is compared to China's WeChat, integrates social media, messaging, and access to government services. President Putin has called Max a "secure" alternative, but EU officials have expressed skepticism, seeing it as part of a strategy to create a "digital iron curtain" in Russia amidst ongoing international sanctions.
