Jack Dorsey has launched a new messaging application called Bitchat, which operates outside the conventional internet framework. Bitchat uses Bluetooth technology to send messages directly between devices, eliminating the need for phone numbers, servers, and data plans. The app allows communication over distances of up to 300 meters by relaying messages through nearby devices. Bitchat does not include usernames, chat backups, or lengthy inbox histories; messages are ephemeral, encrypted, and stored locally. The beta version was launched on Apple’s TestFlight, filling 10,000 testing slots quickly. The app currently supports small group chats with features like hashtags and password protection, and future updates may introduce WiFi Direct support. Bitchat aims to provide direct, unmediated communication, aligning with Dorsey's vision for user-centric technology.

As of July, Windows 11 has surpassed Windows 10 in global market share, claiming 52% compared to Windows 10's 44.59%. Microsoft has changed the extended support program for Windows 10, allowing users to sync their PC settings to the cloud using the Windows Backup app to receive an additional year of security updates at no cost. This option provides users more time to decide on upgrading to Windows 11, particularly for those with PCs that do not meet its system requirements. Users are cautioned against remaining on Windows 10 without security updates due to potential vulnerabilities. There is speculation that Microsoft may extend support options further in response to concerns about older PCs.

Windows 10 will reach its end-of-life support on October 14, 2025, prompting backlash from users and a petition from the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) urging Microsoft to reconsider its decision. Microsoft will provide free security updates beyond the end-of-life date, but only under specific conditions, leading to concerns about accessibility due to stringent system requirements. PIRG argues that the updates will not sufficiently address the needs of the estimated 400 million Windows 10 PCs unable to upgrade to Windows 11. Users have limited options, including syncing settings to the cloud, redeeming Microsoft Reward points, or paying for extended security updates (ESU). While Microsoft has made some concessions, such as offering ESU for individuals and affordable pricing for educational institutions, it has not committed to extending Windows 10 support or easing Windows 11's hardware requirements. Windows 11 is gaining market share, reaching 47.73% in June, while Windows 10 holds 48.92%. Microsoft is promoting Windows 11 and its AI-enhanced features, claiming significant performance improvements. Additionally, a movement called End of 10 is encouraging users to switch to Linux as Windows 10's end-of-life approaches, highlighting benefits like the absence of ads and telemetry tracking.

Microsoft has announced free options for Windows 10 users to extend support, initially expected to require an annual fee. However, many users are still planning to transition away from Windows. Microsoft will eventually phase out Windows 10, pushing users towards Windows 11. The company aims to encourage upgrades to new hardware and software, which may lead to increased advertisements within Windows 10. Users considering the free security extension have options like syncing settings to OneDrive or redeeming Microsoft Rewards points, but these may not appeal to those planning to switch to Linux. Linux Mint is presented as a more exciting alternative, offering continuous updates and a vibrant community, attracting users looking for a dynamic computing experience.

Windows is the primary target for malware attacks, leading to a focus on antivirus applications for the platform, while macOS users have fewer options. Norton AntiVirus Plus for Mac offers robust cross-platform protection and has received perfect scores from independent testing labs, excelling in phishing protection. It is priced at approximately .99 annually for a single license and .99 for a five-license subscription. Norton supports the latest three macOS versions: Sequoia (15), Sonoma (14), and Ventura (13). The Gen stack, a new antivirus engine, consolidates technology from Norton, Avast, and AVG, ensuring consistent performance. Norton achieved a perfect score of 18 points in independent testing, with a 100% detection rate for Mac malware and Windows-specific threats. It offers flexible scanning options, with quick scans completing in 30 seconds and full scans in 27 minutes. Norton has a 100% detection rate for phishing sites and includes a smart firewall and intrusion prevention system. Its password manager offers basic functions but lacks advanced features. Google is developing a Handoff alternative for Android that aims to manage apps, tasks, media, and notifications across multiple devices. This feature will allow users to start a task on their phone and continue it on a tablet or Chromebook. Recent code discoveries from Google Play Services beta indicate the inclusion of a "Handoff" feature and an "App Cast" feature, which may enable streaming applications between devices. Unlike Apple’s Handoff, which does not handle notifications, Google's upcoming feature may provide a more comprehensive multi-device experience. Current Android users rely on third-party apps for synchronization, which often lacks seamlessness. Samsung has a similar feature called App Continuity, but it does not match the refinement of Apple’s Handoff.

Android Central's Editor's Desk discusses the integration of virtual reality (VR) with everyday devices, highlighting advancements in VR headsets like the Quest 3, which features color passthrough. This allows users to remain aware of their surroundings while using VR. However, accessing smartphone notifications can be challenging in VR. To address this, Meta launched the Smart Connect app for the Quest 3, enabling users to stream and control their Motorola smartphones directly from the headset. Setting up Smart Connect involves downloading the app and syncing devices via a QR code. The app allows for app streaming, creating a phone-like interface in VR, and supports multiple apps. It also includes a desktop mode for a computer-like experience. However, users may face issues with app scaling, keyboard functionality, and navigation due to small interface elements. Overall, Smart Connect aims to enhance connectivity between smartphones and VR technology.
