Microsoft is launching a feature called "Startup Boost" for its Office applications, scheduled for rollout in mid-May. This feature aims to improve loading times by introducing a background task that activates upon user logon, integrated into the Windows Task Scheduler. Users will see new tasks labeled Office Startup Boost and Office Startup Boost Logon in their task scheduler. The feature requires a minimum of 8 GB of RAM and 5 GB of free disk space and will deactivate when Energy Saver mode is activated. Users can disable Startup Boost through the Office app settings, but it will reactivate with each new Office update. Additionally, Microsoft is testing ad-supported versions of its Office desktop applications.

Google and high-end chipmakers decided to kill 32-bit support entirely in Android 14, leading to benefits such as freeing up system resources, better security, and improved performance. This change means that many 32-bit-only games, including classics like the Metal Slug series and King of Fighters franchise, can no longer be played on newer devices. Options to continue playing these games include using a phone with Android 13 or Xiaomi's flagship phones with a framework to run 32-bit apps, although the latter is limited to the Chinese market. Other suggestions include using a virtual machine running an older version of Android, but this may not work due to hardware limitations.

Antivirus software should effectively block malware threats and receive regular updates. It is advisable to choose software with high ratings from reputable labs like AV-Test. The software should not consume excessive system resources, and personal testing through free trials is recommended. Antivirus solutions monitor user activities to identify and neutralize threats, prioritizing user privacy by anonymizing data and not selling it. Many providers offer bundled services, including ransomware protection, phishing protection, password managers, VPNs, safe browsing tools, parental controls, and identity theft protection. While bundles can save time and money, individual tools may be more suitable for specific needs. Leading antivirus solutions for Windows often extend protection to Android, iOS, and MacOS, though some features may be limited on non-Windows platforms. Initial discounts for antivirus solutions may lead to higher renewal prices, and plans typically cater to multiple devices, with options for single or dual-device plans available.

The search functionality in Windows 11 has been improved, but users may still experience slow performance or difficulty finding files. An alternative is Everything, a free utility by Voidtools that efficiently finds files and folders by indexing their names and continuously tracking changes. It has a lightweight design that minimizes resource usage, making it suitable for older PCs. Everything provides almost instantaneous search results by indexing the entire local drive, displays hidden files by default, and offers easy installation. It features real-time indexing, allowing immediate updates when files are modified, and has a portable version for use on different computers. Additionally, Everything can index network drives for efficient searches across shared devices. It is free to use, ad-free, and does not contain bloatware, with donations accepted to support the developer.

Antivirus software scans files for threats like viruses and malware and is generally recommended to be kept running continuously. However, it may need to be temporarily disabled in certain situations, such as to free up system resources, install a program that is being blocked, avoid false flags from the antivirus, or address privacy concerns. To disable antivirus on Windows 11, users can access Microsoft Defender through system settings and disable options like Real-time Protection and Tamper Protection. They may also need to disable the firewall if a download is blocked. On MacOS, the antivirus protection includes Gatekeeper, which cannot be disabled, and users can partially disable X-Protect but not Notarization. Before disabling antivirus, users should close non-essential programs, ensure they only download trusted files, and promptly re-enable the antivirus after completing necessary tasks. Disabling antivirus exposes the computer to potential malware threats, so caution is advised.

The kernel is the core component of the Windows operating system, residing in protected memory and managing interactions between the OS and hardware. It schedules processes, manages system resources like memory and storage, and orchestrates device access. A significant incident in July 2024 involved a bug introduced by CrowdStrike's cybersecurity device driver, which operated in kernel mode and caused failures in up to 8.5 million Windows PCs, rendering them unusable. The Windows kernel is structured using Intel's ring model, with the kernel in ring 0 having unrestricted access to system resources, while user applications reside in ring 3. The kernel performs three main roles: providing interfaces for user interaction, launching and managing applications, and overseeing hardware devices. It engages in various functions, including loading OS components, organizing processes, scheduling applications, managing memory, and overseeing I/O devices. The kernel meticulously organizes and schedules processes, executing them in brief time slices. To address kernel-related issues, Microsoft introduced the Quick Machine Recovery tool as part of its Windows Resiliency Initiative, aimed at helping IT administrators resolve OS problems more efficiently.

Windows Explorer is a key application for file navigation on Windows PCs, but managing multiple instances can be cumbersome. The Explorer Tab Utility enhances this experience by allowing users to open multiple Windows Explorer instances as tabs within a single window, similar to web browsers. This utility requires Windows 11 (22H2 Build 22621 or later) and integrates seamlessly with Windows Explorer upon installation. Users can rearrange tabs, open multiple folders as individual tabs, and utilize customizable hotkeys for efficiency. Although some antivirus programs may flag it as malware, it is an open-source application. After using the utility, many users find it challenging to return to standard Windows Explorer due to its improved functionality and streamlined interface.

A cluttered computer desktop can lead to a decline in performance, indicating the need for system cleanup. Regular maintenance enhances speed, storage space, and overall functionality. Windows has built-in tools for optimization, starting with ensuring the latest updates are installed. Windows 11 features "Cleanup Recommendations" to identify large files and unused applications for deletion. The Disk Cleanup utility can remove unnecessary files like temporary internet files and system cache files, recovering disk space and improving speed. Clearing the location cache and flushing the DNS cache can also enhance performance. Additional maintenance tips include regularly emptying the Recycle Bin, organizing files, uninstalling unused applications, using external storage for large files, and running malware scans.
