A new residential tower named Out of the Box, designed by Dutch architecture firm MVRDV, is being built in Taipei’s Tianmu neighborhood. The 25-story structure reaches a height of 250 feet and features a dynamic facade with box-like protrusions that create additional living spaces such as balconies and terraces. MVRDV utilized digital scripting to navigate Taiwan’s building regulations, allowing for a balance of sunlight and privacy. The design includes a small number of repeating apartment types with variations due to the protruding boxes. The tower aims to foster community by providing private outdoor spaces in a humid subtropical climate. It is clad in marble, enhancing its sophisticated appearance while integrating with planned greenery to create a vertical garden.

Japan’s Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) has ordered Google to stop certain business practices related to its Android operating system, specifically the Mobile Application Distribution Agreements (MADAs) that required manufacturers to pre-install specific Google applications. The JFTC found that these agreements violate Japan’s Antimonopoly Act, stifling competition and creating market barriers. Google must cease mandating pre-installation of its applications, allow installation of competing products, and enable users to choose their default search service. This action is the first regulatory measure by the JFTC against a major American tech firm. Additionally, Google is facing scrutiny for allegedly obstructing Yahoo! Japan's use of its advertising technology and has been warned of fines for not opening its app store to more competition. Globally, Google is dealing with antitrust challenges, including potential forced divestitures in the U.S. The company has also signed a power purchase agreement in Taiwan for a ten-megawatt geothermal energy project, aiming to pursue similar initiatives in Asia.

Recent research from cybersecurity firm Sophos has identified the use of PJobRAT malware targeting users in Taiwan through instant messaging applications SangaalLite and CChat, which mimic legitimate platforms. These malicious apps were available for download on various WordPress sites, now taken offline. PJobRAT, an Android remote access trojan first identified in 2019, has been used to steal SMS messages, contacts, device information, documents, and media files. The recent cyber-espionage initiative lasted nearly two years, affecting a limited number of users, indicating a targeted approach by the attackers. The latest version of PJobRAT lacks the ability to steal WhatsApp messages but allows attackers greater control over infected devices. The distribution method for these apps remains unclear, but previous campaigns involved third-party app stores and phishing pages. Upon installation, the apps request extensive permissions and provide basic chat functionalities. Sophos researchers note that threat actors often refine their strategies after campaigns, suggesting ongoing risks.
