Microsoft PowerToys is introducing a new optional low memory mode to address significant memory usage from inactive background processes. This feature, developed by an independent contributor, will close the helper process of specific utilities when not in use, allowing users to relaunch them with a hotkey, albeit with a slightly slower initial launch. The initial rollout will support four tools: Text Extractor, Color Picker, Advanced Paste, and Peek. A shared settings map and helper APIs have been introduced to facilitate this feature, which was renamed to “Close apps when inactive” during the code review process. Users can enable this memory-saving behavior globally or for specific applications, with each supported module featuring a toggle on its settings page. The feature is not yet available in PowerToys, and the default behavior will keep background processes running until users opt into the new feature. The code has passed initial validation checks and is awaiting final confirmation before public release.

Several hundred million Windows 11 users are experiencing frustrations due to the absence of Microsoft features like Recall and Cocreator, which are only available on Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft has divided Windows 11 into two tiers, with the latest AI functionalities requiring specific hardware known as Copilot+ PC. To qualify, a device must have: - An NPU capable of at least 40 TOPS - A minimum of 16 GB of RAM (DDR5 or LPDDR5) - At least 256 GB of SSD storage - Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer - A processor from specific families: Qualcomm Snapdragon X series, Intel Core Ultra 200V (Lunar Lake), or AMD Ryzen AI 300 series Many PCs lack these features due to missing NPUs, insufficient TOPS ratings, unsupported processor generations, outdated Windows versions, rollout delays, or regional limits. Features locked behind Copilot+ include Recall, Click to Do, Cocreator in Paint, Windows Studio Effects, Live Captions with Translation, Improved Windows Search, and Auto Super Resolution. To check for Copilot+ compatibility, users can verify the presence of an NPU in Task Manager, ensure they have Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, and confirm their processor against the approved list. While some workarounds exist to enable features on unsupported PCs, they are often unstable and not recommended for primary use. Most users may not need to upgrade their laptops unless they require on-device AI features or their current device is significantly outdated. The AI feature gap is not currently critical for most users, as many features are optional or not essential.

A glitch in Windows 11 has caused the search box in the emoji picker to disappear, affecting users' ability to search for emojis by name. This issue has been reported by multiple users and confirmed by Windows Central in the Insider Beta channel, but Microsoft has not acknowledged it or provided a fix. A temporary solution involves restarting Windows Explorer through Task Manager, which can restore the search box functionality. The bug's prevalence varies among users, and it is unclear if it affects stable releases of Windows 11.

Microsoft is introducing a feature called the "Low Latency Profile" for Windows 11, which temporarily boosts CPU speeds during critical tasks to reduce delays and stuttering. Early reports indicate that this feature can accelerate app launches by up to 40% and improve Start menu performance by up to 70%, especially for budget PCs. The Low Latency Profile activates automatically, responding to performance demands without user intervention, and the CPU can spike usage up to 96% before returning to normal levels. Currently in testing, this feature aims to enhance the responsiveness of Windows 11 while minimizing impacts on heat generation and battery life.

The Steam Controller features trackpads that serve as substitutes for a mouse and keyboard, providing precision for desktop browsing. It defaults to a desktop configuration upon startup, which is not user-friendly and requires users to memorize the button layout or create a custom configuration. Customization is hindered by software issues, including an inability to modify the desktop configuration and challenges with assigning buttons. Users have reported difficulties with Guide Button Chords and Action Sets, leading to wasted time and confusion. The Quick Access Menu button cannot be customized, limiting its effectiveness. Despite these issues, the controller performs well without extensive customization, boasting impressive battery life and comfort. Improvements in software explanations and customization accessibility are needed for broader appeal.
