Leaked documents reveal that Microsoft developed Project Aion, a Copilot-centric operating system distinct from Windows 11, which was never released. Aion was designed without a Start menu, desktop icons, or a traditional taskbar, placing Copilot at the center of user interaction. The project was conceived as early as 2024 and aimed to redefine user engagement with technology, focusing on education, entertainment, and task completion. It utilized a streamlined Windows codebase called Win3, which was lighter than Windows 11 but lacked support for legacy Win32 apps. Aion featured a personalized dashboard with task cards and app icons for both Microsoft and third-party applications. It was intended to run on various AI-focused devices and aimed to create a versatile operating system adaptable to different hardware configurations. Key features included a conversational user experience, an "Ask me anything" box for queries, and "Spaces" for project organization. Despite its innovative design, Aion was primarily aimed at enterprise use and faced limitations due to the absence of traditional desktop applications. The likelihood of Aion's release is slim as Microsoft has shifted its focus to refining Windows 11 and has begun retracting ambitious AI integrations, prioritizing stability and performance enhancements over new operating systems.

On August 20, 2026, EnterpriseDB (EDB) announced the general availability of its Disaster Recovery feature for WarehousePG, enhancing EDB Postgres AI's analytical capabilities by enabling recovery of petabyte-scale data in minutes rather than days. This feature allows organizations to maintain a current recovery environment across on-premises, cloud, or hybrid setups, and provides flexibility in activating recovery. The implementation of Disaster Recovery for WarehousePG resulted in approximately 180 times faster recovery, with restore-point replay averaging 16 minutes, full backups decreasing from 44 hours to about 11 hours, and nearly 99% less query lock time. The recovery model was achieved without any modifications to the application architecture. WarehousePG leverages the Postgres framework for disaster recovery processes and includes built-in high availability to safeguard against component failures. The upcoming September version update will integrate Disaster Recovery configuration into WarehousePG Enterprise Manager, allowing operational teams to manage cluster health and resource utilization effectively.

Microsoft released its monthly Patch Tuesday security updates, which included dynamic updates and new .NET Framework versions. Users of Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows Server are experiencing printing issues after installing the August 2026 .NET Framework cumulative updates, particularly with Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) applications that fail during printing tasks or when generating PDF or XPS documents. The problems are linked to specific fonts, notably Calibri, and may result in a System.IO.FileFormatException. Microsoft has provided a temporary workaround involving an AppContext switch, but enabling this switch disables certain security protections from the August 2026 update, potentially exposing applications to vulnerabilities. No permanent fix or timeline for one has been provided.

Malware researcher Dominik Reichel has discovered a sophisticated Windows backdoor named Sleepwalker, which remains dormant in memory until activated by a specially crafted network packet. Sleepwalker uses a 23-instruction command language to execute tasks, including running code in memory and exfiltrating data. It activates through a proprietary activation packet that does not contain readable commands. The malware targets a VMware VMCI and disguises itself as Microsoft's dpapi.dll, mimicking its functions while redirecting calls to a non-existent file. Once it confirms its host process as ERAAgent.exe, it enters a dormant state to evade detection. Sleepwalker monitors for a specific pattern known as a magic packet to decrypt and interpret commands. Commands sent to it are encrypted with AES-256-CCM and must be read in a specific order. The backdoor includes functionalities for sending and concealing data, receiving tasks, and executing programs. Reichel has developed a toolkit to decode Sleepwalker’s bytecode and a mitigation guide for affected users. However, there are significant gaps in knowledge regarding the initial access method, victim identification, and the malware's operator.

A new feature in the Windows Insider program for Windows 11 allows users to designate specific amounts of unified memory for graphics and AI applications, discovered in build 29648 by user @XenoPanther. Unified memory enables sharing between the CPU, GPU, and other processors, with support for up to 128GB of unified RAM from NVIDIA and integrated features from AMD. This feature aims to reserve additional unified memory for demanding applications, enhancing performance by ensuring consistent access to high-speed memory and reducing latency issues. It is still in development and not officially announced by Microsoft, but users can enable it using ViveTool, with a recommendation to wait for further testing before widespread use.

Splashtop has launched its antivirus product, Splashtop Shield, after over two decades in remote access solutions. The antivirus received a four-star rating but is still being refined. It offers remote care capabilities for families, with various licensing options: an Individual license for two computers, a Family Lite license for up to five devices, and a full Family subscription for ten devices. Pricing is competitive within the market. Splashtop Shield enhances security by blocking unapproved remote access tools and provides a control console for family members to manage antivirus settings. In testing, it scored 7.8 out of 10 for malware protection, lower than competitors, and blocked 86% of malware-hosting URLs. It excelled in phishing protection, detecting 99% of fraudulent attempts. The Family Guardian feature allows comprehensive control over family members' antivirus settings, facilitating remote assistance. However, the antivirus component lacks the robustness of established competitors, and its performance raises concerns.
