Googlebooks and Intel: Google’s Android app caveat

Google confirmed that most Android applications work well on both Intel and Qualcomm-powered Googlebooks, but some complex applications may need adjustments for optimal performance on Intel architecture. This need for tuning arises because many Android apps were originally designed for Arm processors. Google introduced five Googlebook models, three with Intel processors and two with Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processors. The application binary interface (ABI) distinguishes how compiled code relates to specific processor platforms, with arm64-v8a for Arm CPUs and x86_64 for x86-64 CPUs, explaining why some complex apps may require tuning for Intel-based devices.

Google accused of overcharging 20 mil consumers in UK class action

On October 6, Google faced a legal challenge for allegedly imposing excessive charges on Android app developers for over a decade, inflating prices on the Play Store and affecting approximately 20 million customers in the UK. The case, initiated at the Competition Appeal Tribunal in London, claims Google's 30% commission on digital purchases violates competition law, with potential payouts of £1.2 billion for consumers affected since 2015. Lawyers argue that Google has exploited its market dominance to impose unfair prices, while Google denies any anti-competitive behavior. The scrutiny of app stores has increased globally, with both Google and Apple facing regulatory challenges, including fines imposed on Apple by the EU and a €430 million fine on Google for restricting app developers. The current case follows a ruling that Apple abused its dominant position, indicating potential changes in app store regulations.

Your Pixel Launcher may be getting a clever new way to make app suggestions

Google's Pixel Launcher is enhancing its app suggestion feature, which allows users to access frequently used applications from their home screen or app drawer. Currently, suggestions are based on recently used apps, frequently accessed apps, and user routines. Recent findings indicate that location-based factors may soon influence these suggestions, although Google has not confirmed this integration. The changes suggest that app suggestions could become more contextually aware, potentially recommending apps based on user location. There is no concrete evidence that location data is currently being used for app suggestions, but the tech community is closely monitoring developments. An APK teardown has provided insights into potential future features, though not all may be released publicly.

Windows 11 update reduces RAM usage

Microsoft's Windows 11 26H2 update has led to a significant decrease in RAM usage, with users reporting reductions of up to 3GB on devices with 16GB of memory. The update includes performance enhancements such as improved RAM management through a feature called Low Latency Profile, which optimizes CPU task completion and allows for smoother operation of applications. Microsoft has not formally acknowledged the RAM reduction linked to this update.

Pixel 11 users are reporting Google Maps freezes and strange visual glitches in Android Auto

Users of Google's Pixel 11 series are experiencing significant issues with Google Maps while using Android Auto, including freezing, flickering, and graphical glitches. Reports describe "pixelated black static" appearing in place of the map, affecting both wired and wireless connections. Attempts to resolve the issue by uninstalling the app or clearing its cache have been ineffective. The root cause is unclear, and it is uncertain if Google is addressing the problem. Some users have found that keeping their device unlocked improves performance, while others report no issues. An earlier update to Google Play Services aimed to fix connection bugs, but feedback on its effectiveness has been mixed.

Windows 11 Celebrates 5th Birthday with Over One Billion Users Worldwide

On October 5, 2021, Microsoft launched Windows 11. As of December 31, 2025, Windows 11 surpassed Windows 10 in performance benchmarks and achieved over one billion global users in 1,576 days, compared to 1,706 days for Windows 10. Windows 11 features a modern design and user-friendly interface but has faced challenges such as bugs and system crashes. Microsoft plans to maintain Windows 11 as a long-term platform following the end of support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.

Microsoft distinguished engineer fires back at anti-Windows 11 rage-bait, says “more developers use Windows” than Linux or macOS

Microsoft Distinguished Engineer David Fowler addressed a viral post on social media that dismissed Windows as a viable operating system for developers, asserting that Windows is the most widely used operating system among developers. According to Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey, Windows is preferred by 49.5% of professional developers, while macOS is at 32.9% and Ubuntu at 27.7%. WSL accounted for 16.8%, and Linux outside of WSL garnered 16.7%. In contrast, a poll by The Pragmatic Engineer indicated Windows usage among developers at only 12%, with macOS at 61.6% and Linux at 24.2%. The appeal of Unix tooling is significant for web, cloud, backend, and AI developers, while Windows remains popular among .NET and C# developers, Visual Studio users, and game developers. Microsoft is enhancing its Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) to better cater to developers' needs.

The Google app could soon get a cleaner, more organized settings page, and here’s your first look

Google is redesigning the settings page for its Google app to improve usability and accessibility. The new layout will transition from a list format to a card-based design, categorizing settings under labels like Your App Experience and Privacy & Safety. Key features such as Search personalization and SafeSearch will be more prominently displayed on the main settings screen. The redesign will follow Google's Material 3 Expressive design language, but it differs from a similar initiative for the Gemini app. The release timeline for the new settings page is currently uncertain.
