Atlassian’s 4 Million PostgreSQL Database Migration: When Standard Cloud Strategies Fail

Atlassian migrated approximately 4 million Jira databases to Amazon Aurora to enhance the reliability and cost-effectiveness of its Jira Cloud platform. The migration involved 2,403 RDS database instances, resulting in 2.6 million databases migrated and 1.8 million databases drained from source instances. Each Jira database corresponds to about 5,000 files on disk, leading to over 27.4 billion total database files utilized in Jira. The migration aimed for a service level agreement (SLA) of 99.99% and involved technical challenges due to the large number of databases and files. At its peak, Atlassian migrated up to 90,000 Jira databases daily, averaging around 38,000 databases per day. The team developed a custom orchestration tool and utilized AWS Step Functions to manage the migration process while minimizing tenant downtime and migration expenses.

Jace, the host of the YouTube channel MetraByte, attempted to install Windows 95 and run Doom on a Sony PlayStation 2. He faced significant challenges due to the differences in architecture between the PS2's MIPS processor and the x86 code of Windows 95. Initially using DOSBox, he made "47 attempts" before switching to Bochs, an emulator for x86. The process was fraught with technical difficulties, including limited I/O capabilities, read and write errors, and missing files. After approximately "14 hours," he successfully reached the Windows 95 setup screen and launched Paint, but was unable to run Doom95.

The final version, 22H2, will receive security updates until that date, after which users will not have technical support or security fixes. Users can choose to continue using Windows 10 without upgrades, buy a new PC that meets Windows 11 requirements, switch to a Linux distribution or ChromeOS Flex, pay Microsoft for Extended Security Updates (ESUs), or upgrade incompatible hardware to Windows 11 using documented methods. Microsoft will offer ESUs for Windows 10 at a cost, with reduced rates for educational institutions and higher prices for business customers. Individual consumers can subscribe for continued security updates until October 2026.

Windows 10’s latest update packs a nasty bug, and while your system might be safe, it’s vital you check now

Windows 10 users are experiencing issues with the May update, which has a bug affecting business laptops with Intel vPro processors. This bug can cause update installation failures and repeated automatic repair attempts. Microsoft has released an emergency fix, KB5061768, which users should apply before installing the May update. The problem stems from the termination of the lsass.exe service, leading to automatic repair failures and potential lockouts for users with Device Encryption or BitLocker. To recover, users may need to disable Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) and Intel VT for Direct I/O in BIOS settings, which typically requires the BitLocker recovery key. A workaround allows users to disable Intel TXT without changing Intel VT settings. Users can access BIOS by pressing keys like F2, F10, or F12 during startup, navigate to the Intel TXT setting, disable it, and then restart their PC to install the emergency patch. It is recommended to install the emergency fix before downloading the May update. Similar bugs have occurred in previous updates for Windows 10 and 11. Windows 11 users should note that a clean install of version 24H2 automatically applies Device Encryption, which requires careful management of Microsoft account credentials for recovery keys.
