Russian Orthodox Priest Urges People to Pray for End to Telegram Messenger App Ban

A priest from the Russian Orthodox Church, Alexander Mikushin, has urged believers to pray for the restoration of access to Telegram after Russia's communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, announced stricter limitations on the platform. On February 10, Roskomnadzor planned to escalate measures against Telegram due to its non-compliance with Russian law, leading to access issues reported in 64 regions by February 13. Telegram's user base surged from 91 million in October to 105 million in November, coinciding with the blockage of WhatsApp in Russia. The platform has been crucial for Russian forces in the Ukraine conflict, but outages have raised concerns about communication vulnerabilities. Mikushin has previously advocated for a free internet and participated in a rally against online restrictions. A senior church official advised clergy not to frame the blocking of Telegram in religious terms. Bishop Pitirim of the Skopin Diocese linked the ongoing conflict in Ukraine to "unclean forces" from occult practices and abortions.

Russia: “Slowing down” of Telegram messaging app another blow for freedom of expression

Other messaging services, such as Signal and Viber, have also been blocked. Additionally, Russian authorities promoted the domestically developed MAX messenger, raising concerns among human rights groups regarding its security and privacy.

The malware propagates through malicious websites posing as app catalogs and targets approximately 3,000 different models of devices. It features unprecedented control mechanisms via Redis database integration, allowing extensive manipulation of victims' accounts and devices, including hiding evidence of compromise and autonomously managing messaging functionalities. The malware extracts sensitive data, including SMS messages and clipboard contents, and uploads information to attacker servers every three minutes. Brazil and Indonesia are primary targets, with the malware available on third-party app stores under fraudulent identities.

Telegram Messenger, Inc. is in the approval process for office registration with Roskomnadzor, though the application date is undisclosed. Previously, Telegram has taken minimal steps to comply with Russian localization laws. The platform remains popular in Russia, attracting a varied user base. Speculation exists about the timing of this move, especially with new regulations mandating that personal devices sold in Russia come pre-installed with a state-sponsored messenger, which is expected to be filled by a new app called Max. Roskomnadzor has not confirmed Telegram's plans and has directed inquiries to the company. Telegram has not publicly commented on the office registration.

Feds say Ashland man had child porn on Telegram Messenger app. What’s next

Brent Vreeland, a 36-year-old resident of Ashland, has agreed to voluntary detention after a federal hearing on April 24, facing charges related to the distribution of child pornography via the Telegram Messenger app. He has been charged with one count of transportation of child pornography following an investigation that began last October. Vreeland was apprehended at his home after arriving at Logan International Airport in Boston from Reykjavik, Iceland. During a secondary screening, security personnel found suspected child pornography on his phone, leading to an alert for federal investigators. The investigation revealed that Vreeland had conversations on Telegram soliciting content involving minors and sent a video featuring a child as young as four years old to another user, with authorities discovering 30 media files depicting children in his direct messages. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence of five to 20 years in federal prison, a 0,000 fine, and lifetime supervised release. He was ordered to be held without bail during his initial hearing.

Two Russian regions block Telegram app over security fears
