Google is expanding its Gemini Nano AI model by introducing new ML Kit GenAI APIs, expected to be unveiled at the I/O 2025 event. These APIs will allow developers to integrate features such as text summarization, proofreading, rewriting, and image description generation into their applications. Gemini Nano operates on devices, enhancing privacy by processing data locally. The ML Kit GenAI APIs will support various languages and functionalities, including generating concise summaries, correcting grammar, transforming chat messages, and providing image descriptions. Unlike the experimental AI Edge SDK, the GenAI APIs will be in beta, allowing for broader device compatibility beyond the Pixel 9 series, including other Android devices. Public documentation for the ML Kit GenAI APIs is now available for developers.

Amazon will close its Android Appstore on August 20, 2025, ending access for users on Android devices and discontinuing the Amazon Coins program. The Appstore, launched in 2011, struggled to gain a substantial user base despite various innovations. Users will be warned that apps downloaded from the Appstore may stop functioning after the closure, but they can migrate purchased apps to Amazon devices like the Kindle. Amazon has already stopped selling Amazon Coins as of February 20, 2025, and unused balances will be refunded after the closure. Users are advised to disable auto-renewals for subscriptions. The closure reflects the Appstore's failure to resonate with users and diminishing relevance in the market.

Samsung SmartThings recently introduced new features such as Home Insights, Daily Routines, Quick Remote, and Automatic Hub Backup. A report suggests that SmartThings may soon support Wi-Fi routers alongside the upcoming release of Matter 1.4. This update includes the "Enhanced Multi-Admin" feature for easier management of Matter-enabled devices across different ecosystems, allowing integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and SmartThings. Matter 1.4 will also enable Wi-Fi routers to function as Thread Border Routers, allowing control of Wi-Fi routers, modems, and set-top boxes through the SmartThings app. Additionally, it introduces support for energy management devices, helping users optimize energy consumption based on local electricity prices. Support for security cameras is expected in the future update, Matter 1.5. SmartThings is anticipated to integrate support for Matter 1.4 by 2025.
