Meta has introduced "ghost posts" to its Threads app, which disappear after 24 hours, available as of October 27. Users can create these posts using a toggle option that shows a countdown timer. Replies to ghost posts are directed to the creator's direct messages. Threads has also increased the text character limit to 10,000 characters per post and added group chat support for up to 50 participants, including customizable chat names and invite links. Multimedia support has been added for sharing photos, videos, GIFs, and stickers. Additionally, Threads is expanding its messaging features to users in the EU.

Meta Platforms is rolling out direct messaging on its Threads app, starting in select markets like Hong Kong and Thailand, to boost user engagement. The feature will not be encrypted initially. Threads, launched in 2023, has over 350 million monthly active users but is not expected to significantly drive revenue growth by 2025. eMarketer projects a 17.5 percent increase in U.S. monthly active users for Threads, reaching 60.5 million, while X is expected to decline by 14.4 percent to about 50 million users.

The European Union fined Meta over 0 million for violating antitrust regulations by favoring Facebook Marketplace through abusive practices. On December 11, Meta's applications, including Facebook and Instagram, faced significant outages, with over 100,000 disruption reports for Facebook peaking at 1:16 p.m. EST. Meta acknowledged the issue and worked to resolve it, with reports declining to 22,360 by 2:30 p.m. EST. Instagram experienced 64,728 outage reports at its peak, which decreased to 24,143 later. WhatsApp also had over 10,000 outage reports, while the Threads app reported only 914 incidents at its peak.

Meta's Threads app is expanding to include messaging capabilities, allowing users to send messages from Threads to Instagram. This feature will not have its own inbox but will integrate with Instagram's existing messaging system. Adam Mosseri clarified that Threads will not have a separate inbox and will be integrated with Instagram's inbox. This addition is part of Meta's efforts to improve its services, along with introducing a bookmarking feature and testing cross-posting content between Threads and Facebook.
