Microsoft has raised prices for its current generation of Surface devices, causing concerns about the market viability of the upcoming Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 8. The company is facing an identity crisis while refining Windows 11, with some suggesting a transition to Windows 12. The price increases come at a time when Surface is struggling to compete with Apple's MacBook Neo in the budget segment. The upcoming Surface models may lack powerful chips from Intel and Qualcomm, which could hinder their appeal. In the meantime, alternatives like the ASUS Zenbook A16 and HP OmniBook X Flip 2-in-1 are being highlighted for consumers seeking options.

Blizzard Entertainment issued a cease and desist order to Turtle WoW, a private server for World of Warcraft, following a ruling in a copyright infringement lawsuit. The Turtle WoW team announced the complete shutdown of the project after reaching a settlement contingent upon certain actions. Developer Torta expressed the project's significant impact on their lives and the fond memories created over eight years. Turtle WoW offered a nostalgic experience reminiscent of the pre-expansion era of World of Warcraft without raising the maximum level or incorporating recent lore. The shutdown parallels the fate of another private server, Nostalrius, which closed before the announcement of World of Warcraft Classic. While some fan servers have received publisher approval, the Turtle WoW team's appeal for a licensing framework was unsuccessful, highlighting the challenges faced by independent developers in navigating intellectual property laws.

A vulnerability has been discovered in Windows Defender that allows standard users to exploit a logic error in the file remediation process, enabling code execution with elevated privileges without administrative access. This flaw, identified by security researcher Chaotic Eclipse, occurs because Windows Defender does not verify if the restoration location of flagged files has been altered through a junction point. The exploit, named RedSun, takes advantage of a missing validation in the MpSvc.dll file, allowing attackers to redirect file restoration to the C:WindowsSystem32 directory. RedSun operates by chaining together four legitimate Windows features: Opportunistic Locks (OPLOCKs), Cloud Files API, Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), and Junction Points. The execution of the exploit involves monitoring shadow copies, triggering Defender's detection, synchronizing OPLOCKs, and ultimately writing malicious binaries to the System32 directory. The root cause is the lack of reparse point validation in the restoration process, and currently, no patch or CVE has been assigned for this vulnerability. It affects Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2019 and later, and organizations are advised to implement behavioral detection strategies until a fix is available.

A researcher known as “Chaotic Eclipse” has revealed a new zero-day vulnerability in Microsoft Defender, called “RedSun,” which allows local privilege escalation to SYSTEM privileges on Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server when Microsoft Defender is enabled. The exploit has been confirmed to function correctly, and some antivirus vendors have begun detecting it. This follows another vulnerability disclosure by the same researcher, named BlueHammer, which also allows local attackers to elevate permissions. Chaotic Eclipse expressed dissatisfaction with Microsoft’s handling of vulnerability disclosures, claiming they were threatened and experienced frustration with the company’s response. A Microsoft spokesperson stated the company is committed to investigating reported security issues and supports coordinated vulnerability disclosure.

A reflection on the evolution of stealth games highlights the excitement surrounding Battlefield 6, with EA announcing seven new maps, including a remake of Wake Island and the return of naval warfare. The complexities of live service updates create challenges for developers, as exact release dates are often kept secret, leading to player uncertainty. The FPS "season" resembles past expansions but without the associated costs, and the timing for players to re-engage is often just before a season ends. There is a suggestion that increasing the number of maps released each season could enhance player experience, contrasting with competitors like Call of Duty. The author expresses a sporadic engagement with Battlefield 6 after investing over 80 hours, drawn to other shooters in the vast gaming landscape.

Roblox developers face challenges due to new mandatory security measures and age verification restrictions, which have sparked debate among them. To publish games aimed at younger players, developers must now meet specific criteria tied to the new Roblox Plus subscription service, which has replaced the previous Premium model. Concerns have been raised about the impact of these changes on the platform's future, with players expressing frustration over the lack of concessions made in response to feedback. Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman acknowledged the unpopularity of the changes but emphasized their necessity for ensuring age-appropriate content. Additionally, Roblox recently settled a proposed lawsuit from Nevada for million, which will fund children's programs and an online safety awareness campaign. Proposed changes to game publishing are set to take effect in June, allowing developers to create games without a subscription, but those games will only be visible to users aged 16 and older.
