Persistent Telemetry: Permanent Microsoft Windows Identifier

It is generated when a device is linked to a Microsoft account and resides in the Windows registry, being included in data sent to remote servers. There is no option to disable or delete the GDID, and attempts to do so can disrupt essential features. This has led privacy-conscious users to consider alternatives like Linux, which offers more control over data and does not require persistent identifiers. For Windows users, strategies to minimize data linked to the GDID include using local accounts, disabling optional diagnostics, and reviewing cloud app sync settings. Privacy advocates are calling for better user controls and opt-out mechanisms for hardware tracking tokens.

Microsoft just decluttered Windows 11 Search after years of MSN tiles, ads, and trivia

Microsoft is rolling out significant enhancements to Windows Search, starting on July 13, aimed at creating a more streamlined and user-friendly experience for Insiders. The update eliminates clutter from the interface, removing web suggestions and ads, and replacing them with a clean home screen that displays recent searches. Each search result now includes clear labels indicating its source, and the layout has been improved for better organization. Sponsored product cards have been removed from web results, leading to direct answers without promotional content. Users can customize their experience with toggles to disable Bing web results or Microsoft Store suggestions. Local matches now take precedence over web results, improving search accuracy. File search has been enhanced to display results more quickly and include cloud files alongside local ones. Microsoft has also improved the reliability of Search, reducing crashes and loading issues. Users can enable the new features through the Feature flags page if they do not activate after a reboot. There is no official timeline for when these changes will be available to all Windows users.

Worried about status bar clutter with Android Halo? Google may let you clean it up

In Android Canary 2607, Google is developing a new "Status bar" settings section that will allow users to manage the visibility of specific system and notification icons. Notable features include the ability to toggle off the Android Halo AI assistant icon and a new option to hide the mute icon, similar to the existing option for the vibration icon. The settings will include toggles for showing the assistant agent in the status bar and controlling mute icon visibility. The Android Halo icon will only be visible on devices that support the unannounced "Agent Task" feature, which is distinct from Gemini Intelligence. These features are still in development and not yet available to the public.

Windows 11’s Start menu redesign is getting a redesign

Microsoft is redesigning the Windows 11 Start menu in response to user feedback about its size and layout. The new design will utilize native WinUI technology for improved performance and include a Low Latency Profile feature to optimize CPU performance. Key changes will allow users to customize the Start menu with resizing options (Large and Small modes) and the ability to hide specific sections, including the pinned section, apps list, and recommended section. These updates are currently being tested in an Insider build and are expected to be released with Windows 11 26H2 in October.

Android finally lets you choose which apps are backed up, one by one

Google is rolling out an update that allows users to manage Android backups on a per-app basis, moving away from the previous all-or-nothing approach. Users can access this feature through Settings > Accounts & backup > Google backup, where they can see the three apps using the most storage and toggle backups for each app. Disabling the toggle stops future backups and deletes existing data for that app. The Device data section, including SMS messages and call history, remains unaffected. This feature is currently available on Pixel smartphones running Android versions 16 and 17 with version 26.24 of Google Play Services.

Google Is Finally Giving Android Users The Backup Settings They Should Have Always Had

Google is rolling out a per-app backup feature for Pixel devices, allowing users to control which specific apps are backed up to the cloud. This feature can be accessed through Settings > Accounts and backup > Google Backup > Other device data, where users can see the top three apps consuming space and toggle backups on or off for each app. Users can also view the backup size for each app and manage apps that currently have no data backed up. This update aims to give users clearer visibility and control over their Google cloud storage.

Tested: Microsoft just debloated Windows 11 Search without Bing, and it’s crazy fast

Windows 11 has introduced a significant enhancement to its Search functionality, allowing users to completely eliminate web results through a toggle in Insider Experimental build 26300.8697. This feature prioritizes local results and improves search speed. The new toggles for Web Searches and Microsoft Store apps can be found in the Privacy & security settings under "Show suggested search results." Users can still see past web searches if the Search history toggle is active. The web toggle's deactivation leads to local files being displayed first, while the Microsoft Store results can be toggled independently. Disabling both toggles results in a "No results found" message if there are no local matches. The feature is currently experimental and requires enabling via ViveTool. Additional improvements include typo forgiveness for app queries and enhanced search responsiveness. Microsoft is also shifting its strategy to provide users with more control over their Windows experience.

Microsoft says it’ll force install Microsoft 365 Copilot on Windows 11 with MS 365 Business in the next 30 days

Microsoft is reintroducing the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, which will automatically install on eligible Windows PCs with Microsoft 365 desktop applications between mid-June and mid-July. Users in the European Economic Area will not be affected by this automatic installation. Admins can opt out of the automatic integration. The app will be activated by default, requiring no user intervention. Microsoft is not using the Windows Store for this installation; instead, it relies on the built-in Microsoft 365 Apps updater. Users can disable Copilot features on a case-by-case basis in specific Office apps or change privacy settings to block Copilot functionalities. Microsoft has also made Classic plans available in select regions for users who want a version without Copilot. Administrators can use Office policy settings to block connected experiences that drive Copilot functionalities but must opt out through the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center to prevent installation.
