Google's Pixel 11 Pro series features a "HiLight" LED system that provides visual notifications for calls and activity during Gemini conversations. The HiLight LED is customizable through the open-source HiLight Studio app, developed by Dhananjay Bhosale. Users can sideload the app and manage permissions using Shizuku. HiLight Studio allows users to assign colors, create light patterns, and save presets for notifications. It includes six effects: Rainbow, Random, Comet, Pulse, Breathe, and Wave, with options to adjust saturation and brightness. The app respects Do Not Disturb settings and can pause during low battery. However, some users may experience conflicts with the base HiLight functionality, as noted by a user who found that the original LED notifications stopped working after installing the app.

Microsoft's built-in security tool in Windows 11 is considered sufficient for most users, but a recent issue has emerged where certain PCs are unable to complete security scans, potentially exposing them to vulnerabilities. Users on Reddit reported problems with Microsoft Defender, specifically with both Full Scan and Quick Scan functionalities failing. One user noted that a recent update may have caused the tool to crash shortly after scans begin, with offline scans stopping at 90-93% completion. The issue may be linked to a Microsoft Security Intelligence update, and some users have found that upgrading to Security Intelligence Update v1.457.236.0 resolved the problem for them.

In early August, there were no new Windows 11 builds released for over 15 days in the Windows Insider Program. On August 17, Microsoft released five new preview builds, introducing several features and enhancements. Key updates include a fully customizable context menu, allowing users to tailor options directly from Settings under Personalization, and improvements to the desktop background experience with higher resolution previews and better slideshow transitions. The Camera Roll backup feature now automatically backs up photos and videos to OneDrive. The Magnifier tool received a visual refresh, and the Windows Recovery Environment was upgraded to reuse eligible Wi-Fi profiles automatically. Microsoft also removed the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) tool and the Drag Tray feature while maintaining access to WMI through PowerShell. File Explorer improvements include a faster launch for the "Home" page and touch scrolling support in the "Recommended" section. Minor visual adjustments were made to the Windows Security app, enhancing its alignment with the Windows 11 design language.

Take-Two Interactive laid off AI specialist Dicken and a significant portion of the AI team after a year, reflecting industry volatility. Dicken expressed skepticism about generative AI's role in creative processes, noting that many creatives view it as a departure from intentionality. He observed a divide in public perception, with Western audiences more resistant to generative AI compared to Asian audiences. Dicken highlighted challenges in integrating AI into workflows, including vendor lock-in and price volatility, drawing parallels to the Unity engine's pricing crisis. He noted a gold rush mentality among corporations eager to adopt AI, often without proper safeguards. Looking forward, Dicken believes AI will bring long-term changes to gaming but should be seen as a tool to enhance experiences rather than a revolutionary force. He advocated for a thoughtful approach to incorporating AI-generated content, emphasizing the need for alignment with a game's fundamental thesis.

Microsoft has released a guide for IT administrators focused on optimizing Windows deployments and reducing bandwidth usage through Windows Delivery Optimization configured via Microsoft Intune. Delivery Optimization uses a peer-to-peer sharing system, allowing devices to download content from each other instead of solely from Microsoft servers, which helps reduce internet strain for organizations with many Windows PCs. Administrators can create specific peer groups based on network topology and control bandwidth usage for downloads, with options to set different limits for business and off-hours. Microsoft also introduced Connected Cache, which stores frequently accessed content locally to further minimize bandwidth consumption. A statistic shared by Microsoft indicates that using Delivery Optimization can significantly reduce internet traffic, as a 1 GB update for 10,000 devices could otherwise generate 10 TB of internet traffic. The guide recommends starting with a small seeder ring of devices to populate peer caches before wider deployment. Microsoft provides specific policy settings for Delivery Optimization, including default and recommended values for settings such as download mode, peer selection, cache size, minimum file size for caching, cache age, and monthly upload data cap. Proper configuration of Delivery Optimization is suggested to benefit organizations managing large numbers of devices.

Microsoft has removed the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) tool from Windows 11 builds 24H2 and 25H2, as well as beta releases, as part of a deprecation process that began several years ago. WMIC was first deprecated in Windows Server 2012 and Windows 10 and was later made a Feature on Demand in Windows 11 22H2 before its complete removal. The tool had been exploited by malware, including ransomware, for harmful actions such as deleting Shadow Volume Copies and querying security software. Microsoft recommends IT administrators use alternatives like PowerShell, WMI's COM API, or .NET libraries for management tasks.

A single Google Keep note has become essential for daily productivity, allowing for a streamlined approach to task management. In a poll, 27% of respondents use Google Keep as their main productivity tool, while 31% use it in a supporting role. The note consolidates all relevant information, reducing digital clutter and enabling easy access across devices. It includes sections for tasks, recurring responsibilities, and personal reminders, facilitating organization without distraction. The user also maintains a separate Undated Tasks section for less urgent items. While Google Keep simplifies workflow, it lacks advanced features, prompting the use of other apps for specific needs.
