Google has expanded its Android Auto offerings with the beta version 17.0, followed by the stable version released in late June and early July. Updates have included versions 17.2 and 17.6, with version 17.7 being the latest stable version as of late September 2026. A beta version 17.8 is anticipated. Users can sideload the app for early access, though it carries risks. Android Auto 17 introduced features like Gemini AI integration, a new widgets system, a refreshed Material 3 interface, and Immersive Navigation, which provides a 3D view of surroundings. It also supports 60 FPS FHD video playback for select vehicles and can switch video playback to audio-only mode when the vehicle is in motion.

In Android app development, maintaining connectivity, security, and debugging capabilities is crucial. When connecting to a London edge server, all requests must be visible to QA teams, but using a consumer VPN can hinder debugging proxies. A debugging proxy allows developers to inspect request headers and modify data by terminating TLS on their workstation. In contrast, a VPN creates an encrypted tunnel for all device traffic but prevents debugging proxies from intercepting packets. TorGuard is a hybrid solution that combines a VPN with SOCKS5 and V2Ray endpoints, allowing for traffic encryption and application-specific proxying. mitmproxy is an open-source tool that enables scripted request manipulation and can intercept various traffic types. Tailscale uses a WireGuard-based mesh network to provide stable private IPs for devices without needing port forwarding. HTTP Toolkit offers a rootless interception method for Android, directing traffic to a laptop without complex configurations. WireGuard is a high-speed self-hosted VPN that encrypts packets but does not allow for inspection. To inspect traffic while changing geographic egress, developers can run mitmproxy on a laptop and connect it to a VPN, ensuring the proxy is closest to the app. For debugging Android HTTPS traffic, a proxy is preferred for reading or rewriting requests, while a VPN is better for changing exit IPs or encrypted routing. SOCKS5 masks IP addresses but does not encrypt traffic.

Google has introduced a speedometer feature in the Google Maps app on Android Auto, displaying current speed alongside the speed limit. Users have reported issues with the speedometer disappearing from their screens, with some having never accessed it. Other functionalities, such as real-time traffic updates and traffic light information, have also been inconsistently available. Some users have found temporary fixes by opting out of beta programs, using the latest stable versions of the apps, or clearing the cache. Currently, the speedometer is accessible only during active navigation, and Google is working on a feature for an always-on speedometer, but there is no timeline for its full rollout.
