Windows Server Update Services buckle under Microsoft’s metadata mountain

Microsoft's Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) is facing significant challenges, particularly with existing deployments experiencing synchronization issues described as "sync purgatory." The problems stem from "severe degradation" due to a "buildup of publishing metadata," leading to slow synchronization processes and timeouts. This issue is not related to the recent Patch Tuesday update but has seen a "heightened impact" since July 13, 2026. Although WSUS is a critical tool for managing updates in enterprise environments and remains supported, Microsoft has recommended transitioning to alternative solutions, especially cloud-based options, since October 2024. Many administrators continue to rely on WSUS, which poses risks of failed synchronization and potential vulnerabilities. As of now, Microsoft has not provided a workaround for affected servers but has implemented a mitigation for new installations as of July 18. Existing servers are still experiencing difficulties, and Microsoft is working on solutions to help remove problematic metadata. The issue affects nearly all desktop and server operating systems supported by WSUS, including Windows 11 26H1 and older versions like Windows 10 1607 and Windows Server 2012. Administrators currently have limited options and must monitor the situation as it develops.

Microsoft is moving another Outlook feature behind a Copilot paywall

Microsoft will retire the Meeting Insight feature for Outlook users by early September 2026, after which users will lose access to meeting insights, relevant files, and emails. The company is introducing a new feature called "Prepare for this meeting" to summarize content for upcoming meetings. Previously, Meeting Insight did not require a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, but Microsoft is now requiring this license for Copilot Chat across applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Microsoft has expanded its Copilot initiative to nearly 80 products and is shifting towards a paid model for features that were once complimentary.

Santander customers told to check banking app as service axed

Santander will discontinue its annual paper statement detailing banking fees starting in August, requiring customers to access this information through online or mobile banking platforms. The digital-only approach replaces the physical statement that included a summary of charges such as overdraft interest and international debit card fees. Customers can still access fee information digitally, and 9.2 million customers have opted for paper-free banking. Email notifications will inform customers when new statements or documents are available, and documents can be accessed online for up to seven years.

Microsoft is cutting support for some older OneDrive systems soon – here’s what you need to know

Microsoft will cease support for the OneDrive sync app on Windows 10 version 21H2 and earlier on August 15, 2026. Users of these older versions will no longer receive updates, including new features, bug fixes, or security enhancements. Windows 10 version 22H2 will continue to receive updates until October 10, 2028. Windows 10 accounts for approximately 28% of all Windows installations, while Windows 11 accounts for around 70%. Users can still access OneDrive through a web browser if the app becomes incompatible.

Windows 11 Version 26H2 Ships as an Enablement Package With No New Features Over 25H2

Microsoft is set to release Windows 11 version 26H2, an enablement package based on version 25H2, without introducing new features at launch. The update will require only a single restart for devices on versions 25H2 or 24H2, while users on older versions, such as 23H2 or Windows 10, will need a full feature update. Both versions share identical features and are built on the same platform, with version 26H2 using build numbers in the 26300 series. The update process will vary depending on the current version, and version 26H2 will not change hardware requirements. Microsoft plans a gradual rollout of the update, initially as an optional install. Version 26H2 aims to extend support, adding approximately a year to the support timeline, with version 25H2 support continuing until October 2027. Users should verify their current version and back up important files before upgrading.

The Windows 10 hangover is becoming a security problem

Windows 11 is currently operating on 78.8% of Windows devices, while Windows 10 holds a 16.9% share. Microsoft ceased support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, making it vulnerable to security threats. Eligible Windows 10 devices can receive Extended Security Updates (ESU) until October 12, 2027, through a paid program, with free ESU available for users in the European Economic Area until October 14, 2026. Approximately 21.4% of devices in small and medium-sized businesses and 16.6% in large organizations still run Windows 10, often due to budget constraints. Devices in industries like healthcare and manufacturing are particularly slow to adopt Windows 11. Windows 10 devices face nearly three times the number of active vulnerabilities compared to Windows 11, with 66.6% rated as high or critical. About 2.8% of Windows 10 systems do not meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11. A total of 18.7% of Windows devices are running unsupported operating systems, with 22.2% on versions that will reach end of support within six months, totaling 40.9% of systems that are unsupported or soon to be. The consumer ESU program will expire on October 12, 2027, after which many devices will transition to unsupported status.

Minecraft 26.3 Snapshot 4 brings SDL3, and prefers Wayland on Linux

Minecraft 26.3 Snapshot 4 is currently available for testing, featuring a transition from the GLFW library to the SDL3 library, which is expected to improve window management, input handling, and platform integration. The update introduces Borderless Fullscreen as the default setting, allowing players to switch between Borderless and Exclusive Fullscreen modes without restarting the game. For Linux users, the game now prefers Wayland natively when available, moving away from the older X11/XWayland framework. The release date of Minecraft is 8th November 2011, and it supports native Linux.

Minecraft 26.3 Snapshot 4 is a big update hiding under the hood

Minecraft's Snapshot 26.3 update transitions the Java Edition from GLFW to SDL3, improving window management, input handling, and platform support. It uses SDL scancodes for key positions and SDL keycodes for text shortcuts, enhancing control responsiveness. The Raw Input mouse option has been removed, and players can switch between Borderless and Exclusive Fullscreen modes without restarting the game. However, Exclusive fullscreen mode may cause crashes on Windows and is not supported on macOS. Players in Spectator mode can now interact with Nether portals, End portals, and End gateways. The debug overlay has been improved, and the creative inventory has been reorganized. Armadillos will no longer roll up while submerged. New item components for cooking and brewing fuels have been introduced, allowing data pack creators to define parameters like burn duration and cooking speed. Sign behavior has been adjusted to prevent click events by default. There are extensive format changes to world generation, loot tables, predicates, number providers, and advancement triggers, updated to Data Pack version 111.0 and Resource Pack version 92.0. Snapshot 4 addresses various bugs, but players are advised to back up their worlds before using the snapshot to avoid potential damage to saved games.

The demand for faster typing on smartphones has increased, particularly for professionals, students, and interns. Swipe typing, also known as Glide Typing on Gboard, allows users to glide their finger across the keyboard without lifting it for each letter, significantly enhancing typing speed. To use this method on a Google Pixel 8 with Android 16 and Gboard, users should tap on a text box, slide their finger across the keyboard, and lift it only when finishing a word. For Samsung Keyboard users, Swype mode must be enabled in the settings. Gboard's swipe typing feature becomes more intelligent with use, providing word suggestions and allowing users to teach it new words. This feature is effective in multiple languages, including Urdu, and can also be used on Wear OS smartwatches. Although there may be an initial learning curve, swipe typing can greatly improve typing efficiency and is often met with curiosity from others.

Windows 11 Secure Boot is a messy ride on older PCs, and even Microsoft can’t fix it

Microsoft held an OEM Secure Boot Office Hours event with manufacturers like Acer, Asus, Dell, and HP to discuss issues related to the Windows 11 Secure Boot 2023 certificate rollout. Many IT administrators left with unresolved concerns, particularly regarding Secure Boot certificate errors. Participants reported persistent problems, including failures of suggested solutions from official documentation to apply to their hardware configurations. Ed Tittel shared his experience with compliance issues related to CA-2023 certificates, noting that ASUS motherboards sometimes required Secure Boot to be disabled temporarily, while MSI models exhibited erratic behavior. ASRock systems needed manual key resets, and documentation was lacking. Devices from Dell, HP, and Lenovo performed better but still faced staggered rollouts and required multiple reboots for BIOS updates. Specific issues raised included HP's BitLocker recovery loop persisting even with the latest BIOS, challenges with legacy device support from HP, devices showing Secure Boot Status as Unknown, and failures in updating the KEK on HP EliteBooks. Some questions from IT administrators regarding Dell and HP went unanswered during the session. The experiences highlighted a trend of Secure Boot issues across multiple OEMs, not limited to a single vendor. IT administrators are advised to pilot updates on representative hardware, back up BitLocker recovery keys, and consult OEM-specific advisories. The unresolved issues reflect common challenges faced by users, indicating that problems with Secure Boot certificate deployments are widespread across various manufacturers.
