Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 is shaping up to be Google’s best beta yet

Android 17 QPR2 has reached Platform Stability with the release of Beta 4, locking the application programming interfaces (APIs) and allowing developers to refine their apps. Beta 4 reinstates screen mirroring for USB-C XR glasses and resolves issues with 3D mode for smart glasses. Feedback from early testers has been positive, with reports of reduced lag and improved performance. However, some users have noted oversized text and lower display resolution issues, which can be resolved by rebooting. A persistent Bluetooth routing issue for incoming calls has been reported across all QPR2 betas. The update is being rolled out to various Pixel phones and tablets, with a download size of approximately 671MB on the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Existing Pixel owners in the beta program will receive the update over the air, but exiting the program after installation may result in data loss.

Manic Android Malware Exfiltrates Data From Offline Phones via Nearby Infected Devices

A new Android malware threat, codenamed Manic, poses significant risks to Ukrainian banks, government services, and messaging applications, with a reach extending to Russian and European financial institutions, global fintech platforms, cryptocurrency services, and military communication channels. Manic combines Android banking malware and mobile spyware, targeting sensitive applications and enabling comprehensive device takeover. It features a novel Wi-Fi mesh technique for data relay through compromised devices and utilizes phishing sites and dropper apps. The malware originated in February 2026, with initial development leading to its first deployment by late May. It monitors 169 package IDs related to banks, payment services, and messaging applications, primarily affecting Ukrainian targets but also impacting applications in Russia and Europe. Manic can infiltrate commercial and military messaging apps, track locations, monitor notifications, and collect files. It exploits Android's accessibility services to capture sensitive data and employs a store-and-forward relay mechanism for data exfiltration through nearby compromised devices. Google has stated that no apps containing this malware are found on Google Play, and Android users are protected by Google Play Protect.

Windows 11: Movable and Smaller Taskbar in Beta Test

Microsoft is expanding the testing of its redesigned taskbar for Windows 11 to the Beta Channel of the Windows Insider Program with the release of Beta Build 26220.9022 on July 31, 2026. This update allows selected participants to reposition the taskbar along any edge of the screen—top, left, right, or bottom—and introduces a more compact variant that reduces icon size and overall height.
