Virginia Howlett, a pioneering interface designer at Microsoft since 1985, was part of the team that created the themes for Windows 3.1, including the vibrant "Hot Dog Stand" color scheme. This theme featured bright yellow and red and was one of several color palettes designed to allow user customization. Howlett noted that the user interface primarily used black lines on a white background with shades of gray for 3-D buttons. She expressed surprise at the continued interest in Windows 3.1 as it approaches late 2025. The Hot Dog Stand theme was not intended as a joke but rather as a memorable design choice in the history of Windows.

Check Point Research (CPR) identified a significant security vulnerability in the Rust-based kernel component of the Graphics Device Interface (GDI) in Windows, reported to Microsoft in January 2025. The issue was resolved in OS Build 26100.4202, part of the KB5058499 update released on May 28, 2025. The vulnerability was discovered during a fuzzing campaign targeting the Windows graphics component through metafiles, revealing multiple security issues including information disclosure and arbitrary code execution. The specific bug was linked to a crash occurring during the execution of a NtGdiSelectClipPath syscall in the win32kbasers.sys driver, triggered by an out-of-bounds memory access when processing malformed metafile records. Microsoft classified the vulnerability as moderate severity and addressed it in a non-security update, implementing substantial changes to the affected kernel module.

Google has unveiled its new Android design refresh, Material 3 Expressive, which will debut with the Android operating system and extend across the Google app ecosystem. This design builds on the previous Material You system and features "springy" animations, brighter colors, and innovative shapes. The development was informed by user research involving over 18,000 participants, indicating that users can locate important buttons up to four times faster than with older interfaces. Future Android iterations will emphasize playful animations, a bolder color scheme, improved typography for better contrast, a wider variety of button shapes, and more legible status bar icons.

Windows Phone continues to evoke nostalgia among its loyal fans, with fondness for Windows Phone 8.1 surpassing that for Windows 10 Mobile. Microsoft has shown a lack of confidence in its strategic decisions, often reacting to customer feedback, which leads to inconsistency in its product offerings. While Windows 10 Mobile was technically an improvement, it diluted the unique identity of Windows Phone, which had a memorable experience characterized by bold typography and simple icons. This pattern of reactionary changes is evident across various aspects of the Windows ecosystem, highlighting Microsoft's struggle to balance innovation with a clear vision.

Microsoft has announced the discontinuation of legacy PostScript fonts in Windows 11, aligning with Adobe's retirement of PostScript Type 1 fonts in January 2023. This change affects several Adobe products, including Photoshop version 23.0, Illustrator 27.3, InDesign 18.2, and Digital Video and Audio 23.2. Users can still access older versions of Adobe software for these fonts, but Adobe has shifted to OpenType fonts compatible with both Mac and Windows. Microsoft recommends transitioning to alternative font types and provides methods for removing deprecated fonts through the Fonts settings page or File Explorer. Additionally, Microsoft plans to eliminate legacy font management in Windows 11, redirecting the Control Panel’s Fonts page to the Settings app. In 2024, Microsoft has announced the phasing out of NTLM, Direct Access, and other outdated technologies, including the complete removal of WordPad in the upcoming Windows 11 24H2 release. A workaround exists for users to retain access to WordPad by downloading a core file package.
