Google is enhancing the Play Store to allow users to receive updates for sideloaded apps directly from the Play Store. A new feature, "Update from Play," will notify users that they can update sideloaded apps either from the original source or from Google Play. Users on Android 14 may receive a warning that updating from a different source could alter the app's functionality. The Play Store will display available updates for apps from various sources, transferring update responsibility to the Play Store while maintaining users' ability to sideload apps. Google is not banning sideloading but is implementing measures to ensure users are aware of potential risks and changes in functionality when updating from different sources.

The Google Play Store is set to introduce a feature that allows users to install updates for sideloaded apps or those obtained from third-party stores. This feature, indicated by the “Update from Play” option, was discovered in version 42.0.18 of the Play Store through an APK teardown. It aims to enable users to download and install updates directly from the Play Store, transferring update ownership from the original source. Users will also receive alerts about the app's source and the option to update from either the original source or the Play Store. It is currently unclear if selecting the “Update from Play” will permanently redirect future updates to the Play Store.
