Windows Insider builds ship with touchpad upgrades, File Explorer fixes, and a free EDU upgrade path

Windows Insiders are advised to set weekly reminders to check for new builds, as Microsoft has released four Insider builds with various enhancements, including updates to the Touchpad and Touch Keyboard experiences, and a new upgrade pathway for education users. The changes differ by Insider Channel, necessitating users to understand updates specific to their channel. The Windows Insider Program is being restructured, with Beta Channel Insiders yet to transition to the new experience. Insiders moving from the Dev Channel to the Experimental Channel will receive Build 26300.8376, while those from the Canary 28000 series will receive Build 28020.2075, and those from the Canary 29500 series will be updated to Build 29585.1000. Users should refer to release notes for detailed information on features and updates. A free upgrade path to Windows 11 Pro Education is now available for K-12 educational settings, allowing institutions to upgrade Windows 11 Home devices to Pro Education at no cost. This upgrade is one-way only. The Experimental Preview Build 26300.8376 introduces new gesturing functionalities for precision touchpads, including scroll/zoom speed control, automatic scrolling, accelerated scrolling, and single-finger scrolling. Additionally, File Explorer has received updates to improve reliability, readability, and usability.

Microsoft is Rebranding Windows 11’s Drag Tray Feature to ‘Drop Tray’

Microsoft has released three new preview builds of Windows 11 for Insiders in the Canary, Dev, and Beta Channels. - Canary Build 28020.1737: Introduces a feature allowing male users to configure their pen tail button to launch the same application as the Copilot keyboard key, also present in the 25H2 build 26100.8106 and the 24H2 build 26200.8106. - Dev Channel (26300.8068) and Beta Channel (26220.8062) Updates: - The Drag Tray feature has been rebranded as the Drop Tray, with settings moved to System > Multitasking. - Pen users can set their pen tail button to launch the same application as the Copilot keyboard key. - Users can now select a custom name for their user folder during Windows setup, adhering to standard naming conventions. - A new interface for point-in-time restore allows local administrators to view or modify default restore settings and see available restore points.

Microsoft accidentially breaks Windows 10 to Windows 11 upgrade using MCT ahead EOL

Microsoft's Windows 11 Media Creation Tool (MCT) is currently malfunctioning on Windows 10 systems, preventing users from upgrading to Windows 11. The latest version of the MCT, released on September 29, 2025, closes unexpectedly without error messages. Microsoft is aware of the issue and is working on a solution. Users can still upgrade to Windows 11 via the Windows Update method or by downloading the Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) from the Microsoft download page. To check compatibility for Windows 11, users can use the PC Health Check app. Windows 10 support will end on October 14, 2025, but users can extend security updates until October 13, 2026, through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. Enrollment in the ESU program requires a Microsoft account, and different rules apply for users in the EU regarding the enrollment process.
