National Links: Stress Relief is a Minecraft Neighborhood

The Overhead Wire curates national and international news on urban landscapes and shares it with an engaged email list. They highlight stories from Greater Greater Washington, focusing on urban issues in the D.C. area. A research paper identifies five themes from interviews with apartment residents regarding their travel choices: self-selection, the built environment's impact on walking accessibility, transit service provision, subjective safety experiences, and the pragmatism of transport choices based on circumstances. A study reveals that 74% of Americans feel compelled to drive more than desired, with low-income drivers spending up to 40% of their income on transportation. The U.S. Department of Transportation has introduced a scoring bonus for transit projects based on birth and marriage rates, criticized for potentially benefiting certain demographics disproportionately. Cities are reimagining public safety by establishing independent departments for crisis response and violence prevention. The Talking Headways Podcast features Wendy Zhou discussing dynamic accessibility and the limitations of static maps. A quote reflects on the importance of long-term strategic thinking in societal infrastructure and technology adaptation.

Don’t worry, Valve: I’ve got your next Deadlock character concepts sorted

Deadlock features a range of character concepts that could enhance its gameplay and narrative. Notable ideas include: - The Summer Mummy, characterized by floral board shorts and sunglasses, representing summer fun. - A professional baseball-playing Minotaur with a Scottish accent and a backstory involving the Bermuda Triangle. - Three gnomes disguised in a trench coat, part of a whimsical mafia called the Cosa Gnomestra. - A haunted suit of armor that acts as a boxer, engaging in combat while wearing boxing shorts and gloves. - A large, charismatic spider capable of traversing walls and wielding eight weapons. - A reimagined Humpty Dumpty as a tragic antihero who rolls into battle. - The remaining part of the monkey from the tale of the monkey's paw, potentially a sorcerer with magical abilities. - A North Pole elf advocating for labor rights, creating a narrative around social issues. - A deer transformed into a sapient being by a cursed amulet, navigating urban life with humor and relatability.

Deadlock is the king of MOBA character designs, and it’s all thanks to Valve’s embrace of New Yorkyness

In Valve’s MOBA, Deadlock, players explore The Cursed Apple, an urban setting inspired by New York City. The game features new characters that embody the essence of city life, including Solomon, an elderly chess player, Baba, a whimsical grandmother, and the Rat King, who commands rats. Other characters include a reimagined Chinese immigrant construction worker as Sun Wukong, Vyper, a flirtatious criminal, and Seven, a pulp villain with a softer side. Deadlock distinguishes itself with character depth, contrasting with typical MOBA heroes. The game has over 100 unique names for the Rat King's rats and more than 10,000 voice lines. Recent reports indicate a peak in concurrent players, reflecting its growing popularity. The focus on New York archetypes opens possibilities for future characters, such as a ghost journalist or a witch with a hot dog cart.

How Two Android Intent Bugs Broke My App’s Red Alert Button

An Android application named CareVocal (internally referred to as CareBridge) was developed to facilitate communication for the user's mother living in a village. The app features three buttons: green for "feeling good," yellow for "something hurts," and red for "need help." Tapping the red button triggers three actions: saving an entry for her doctor, generating a pre-filled SMS to trusted contacts, and opening the phone dialer with the local emergency number pre-typed. The app requires the user to confirm sending the SMS and calling the emergency number to comply with Google Play's restrictions. During testing, issues arose where the SMS draft would not appear if the dialer was opened first, leading to adjustments in the code. A method was implemented to launch multiple intents simultaneously, ensuring that the SMS draft and dialer could be accessed without conflicts. Additionally, the recording feature was modified to start only after a second tap on the red button, separating it from the alert process to avoid distractions during emergencies. The app does not collect location data and is designed solely for logging and communication without diagnostic capabilities.

This remarkable mod transforms the most frightening horror game of the decade into Mirror’s Edge

TiMan, a modder, has created a mod called Bunker's Edge for the game Amnesia: The Bunker, which transforms the original horror setting into a vibrant urban landscape reminiscent of EA's Mirror's Edge. The mod retains the horror elements, featuring the same menacing creature pursuing the protagonist, Henri. While it showcases innovative modding, Bunker's Edge lacks the polish of Mirror's Edge, with some parkour movements feeling clunky and players occasionally getting trapped in the game’s geometry. The mod also incorporates sci-fi elements similar to Soma, generating excitement and making it one of the most anticipated titles for 2027.
