WhatsApp says Russia has tried to fully block the messaging app

Russia has moved to block WhatsApp entirely within its borders, aiming to redirect users to MAX, a state-supported messaging application criticized for its potential surveillance capabilities. This action is part of a broader strategy by the Russian government to tighten control over digital communication, following previous restrictions on major social media platforms and other messaging services like Signal and Viber. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that WhatsApp could be unblocked if it complies with Russian law. The government is also planning new restrictions on Telegram, which has been vital for military communications in Ukraine. MAX, the promoted national messaging app, lacks end-to-end encryption and is designed to share user data with authorities.

Bitchat allows for the creation of Bluetooth mesh networks to relay messages between devices, even extending beyond typical Bluetooth range. It features password-protected group chats and a store-and-forward option for offline messaging. Future updates will incorporate Wi-Fi Direct to improve network speed and range. Bitchat reflects Dorsey's commitment to decentralization in digital services and is designed to maintain connectivity in situations of internet outages or restrictions.

Android Internet sharing and Call casting widely rolling out with Cross-device services

Google has expanded its Android Cross-device services to a broader audience, introducing features like Internet sharing and Call casting. Users can access these features through the Settings app on their Android devices by navigating to Google, then All services, and finally Devices & sharing. Users can establish a "device group" by enabling preferences on devices signed into the same Google Account. The services are compatible with Android 11 and newer versions. Call casting allows users to transfer calls between devices signed into the same Google Account, currently available for Google Meet. The Internet sharing feature, known as Instant hotspot, enables hotspot access between Android devices (excluding Samsung) and Chromebooks without entering a password, using Bluetooth and device location for connection. Users can manage these features with a toggle to enable or disable options, and the interface shows “Your other devices” categorized as “Added” or “Not added.” The rollout is being implemented with version 24.35.30 of Google Play services, observed on Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices, with new features being released promptly.

Meta updates WhatsApp and Messenger third-party chats in Europe

Meta is enhancing user experience on WhatsApp and Messenger by introducing "third-party chats" in response to the EU's Digital Markets Act. The company announced on September 6 that it has been gathering user insights to develop these functionalities, which will include notifications about new third-party messaging applications. An intuitive onboarding process will help users customize their preferences for receiving messages from third-party apps. Users can choose to receive third-party messages in a dedicated folder, their inbox, or both. Future updates will add features like reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, read receipts, group creation, voice calls, and video calls by 2027. Meta is committed to user privacy and security while addressing the technical challenges of developing third-party chats.
