Black screens persist for Windows 10 AVD users

Microsoft has acknowledged ongoing issues affecting Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) users after the installation of July's non-security preview update (KB5040525), leading to a black screen that can last 10 to 30 minutes. This issue is linked to a deadlock between the Azure Active Directory broker and the AppX deployment service, as well as the Background tasks infrastructure service. Users with FSLogix user profile containers in multi-session environments are more likely to face these problems. Additionally, Windows 11 24H2 users are experiencing issues with Task Manager displaying zero counts for Apps, Background Processes, and Windows Processes after the October 2024 non-security preview update, particularly when the 'Group by Type' view is enabled. Dave Plummer, the original author of Task Manager, described this as a "fairly severe bug."

Microsoft has updated its Windows Health Dashboard to highlight a known issue affecting users of classic Windows 10, specifically those on version 22H2 with recent updates. Users may experience difficulties logging into Azure Virtual Desktop, particularly if they have installed the July 2024 non-security updates (KB5040525) and later. Symptoms include systems hanging on a black screen for 10 to 30 minutes, failures in single sign-on for applications like Teams and Outlook, and network connectivity issues in various Office applications. The problem is caused by a deadlock between the Azure Active Directory broker and the AppX deployment service. This issue primarily affects enterprise environments using FSLogix user profile containers and does not significantly impact regular users of Windows 10 Home, Pro, and Education editions. Microsoft is investigating and will provide further updates. Additionally, Microsoft announced pricing for the Extended Security Program for consumers who wish to continue using Windows 10 beyond its end-of-support date in October 2024, which will incur an additional cost for twelve months of security updates.
