WhatsApp messenger to begin offering usernames

WhatsApp is introducing a feature that allows users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers by creating unique usernames. This feature aims to enhance privacy and security, enabling users to connect solely by exchanging usernames. Users will receive notifications when the feature becomes available in their countries, and creators, small businesses, and organizations can claim usernames they use on other Meta platforms. Usernames will be limited to 35 characters, and high-profile individuals will not be able to register their names. Despite these changes, experts express concerns about WhatsApp's overall privacy practices, as the platform collects extensive metadata for marketing purposes. Users' phone numbers will still be required to create an account, and there will be no public username directory. Kunal Shah has been appointed as the new head of WhatsApp, succeeding Will Cathcart.

Here’s How Google Meet Works On Android Auto While You’re Driving

In 2026, Android Auto will introduce features to improve the driving experience, including native meeting controls for Google Meet integrated into the car's infotainment system. Users must update the Google Meet app and connect their phone to access a dedicated Meet icon, which includes a Scheduled tab for upcoming meetings and a History tab for recent contacts. The system allows seamless handoff of audio and control between the phone and car when entering or exiting the vehicle. The Google Meet experience in Android Auto will be audio-only, disabling video feeds and interactive functions like polls and chat to prioritize driver safety. Essential controls such as mute/unmute and hang up will be available on the car's display, and the app can automatically mute the microphone to reduce background noise. Users must pull over to access visual elements on their phone.

Google rolling out per-app controls for Android Backups

Google has introduced per-app backup controls for Android devices, enhancing user experience. For Pixel users, the backup settings can be accessed through Settings > Accounts and backup > Google Backup > Other device data, now featuring a structured “App data” section that highlights the top three apps and their backed-up data. Users can toggle backup options off for individual apps, with notifications explaining the implications of disabling backups. These controls do not apply to the Device data section, which includes SMS, call history, and device settings. The rollout is confirmed for Pixel devices on stable Android versions 16 and 17 with Google Play services version 26.24, while Samsung users have not yet received these controls. Additionally, Google One for Android has been visually updated to an edge-to-edge design.

Bypassed Windows 11 shows surprising stability on ancient, completely unsupported hardware

Windows 11 has elevated system requirements, necessitating four times the memory and storage for AI-driven applications. A retro hardware enthusiast named Omores installed Windows 11 on a DDR1-based system using an ASRock ConRoe865PE motherboard, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor, 3GB of DDR1 RAM, and an ATI Radeon HD 4650 AGP graphics card. He overcame the lack of AGP support in Windows 11 by using legacy drivers, achieving satisfactory performance for older applications and games. However, Windows 11 version 24H2 requires SSE4.2 CPU instructions, which are not supported by processors from the AGP era, making version 23H2 the last compatible release for such systems.
