Valve has introduced an official Windows driver package for the Steam Machine, allowing users to replace SteamOS with Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit). The package includes drivers for the graphics unit, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth modules, and SD card reader. The graphics driver is custom-designed for the Steam Machine’s AMD chip and is not compatible with standard Adrenalin drivers. Installing Windows will erase SteamOS and all stored data, and there is currently no dual-boot option available. Users must connect to an Ethernet network during setup, as Wi-Fi drivers can only be installed afterward. The drivers are provided "as-is," without official support from Valve. Performance benchmarks show that SteamOS outperforms Windows by 10 to 15 percent, but some users may prefer Windows for compatibility with certain online games and services.

Riot Games is updating its Vanguard anti-cheat system to an "on-demand" model, which will only activate during gameplay and stop once the game ends. This change addresses concerns over Vanguard's previous persistent background operation and kernel mode access. Players must meet specific security criteria to use the new feature, including enabling pre-boot security mechanisms and Windows' native protection features. Approximately 35% of players already meet these conditions, while 3% using older hardware will not have access to the on-demand option until they upgrade. Vanguard will continue its current operation for those unable to meet the requirements. The update is influenced by advancements in Windows and PC hardware security and aims to enhance anti-cheat measures while keeping the process optional for most players.

Valorant's anti-cheat system, Vanguard, has been controversial due to its interference with DMA firmware devices, which are used to cheat in the game. Riot Games posted a message suggesting that Vanguard was making these devices unusable, leading to backlash from the gaming community. Riot clarified that Vanguard does not damage hardware or disable devices but prevents DMA cheat devices from functioning while IOMMU protections are enabled. Players not using DMA devices are not affected. The situation has sparked debate about the balance between anti-cheat measures and their impact on hardware.

Riot Games has clarified that its Vanguard anti-cheat system does not have the capability to damage players' PCs or disable their devices. The company stated that the "paperweights" referenced in a social media post were cheat devices that had been rendered ineffective by updates to the Vanguard system, which enforces security features on accounts using Direct Memory Access (DMA) cheating devices. While cheaters may experience hardware faults when using these cheats, this is a consequence of their actions, and only those using DMA-based cheats would encounter issues. Riot Games reassured players that their PCs would not be "bricked" due to Vanguard's operations.
