Arrowhead Studios has explored the figure known as J.O.E.L., the game master for Helldivers 2. A video team member captured footage of J.O.E.L. inside a glass-doored closet, where it resembled a hacker typing at a keyboard surrounded by monitors showing live gameplay. J.O.E.L. emitted a cackle while contemplating a button that triggers blue beams for successful players but became agitated upon noticing the filming. Johan Pilestedt, co-founder of Arrowhead, previously discussed the influence of tabletop RPGs on the game's storytelling. J.O.E.L. is evolving into a more powerful entity with metaphysical and psionic abilities. Helldivers 2 is set to receive an update titled "The Escalation of Freedom," introducing new enemies, objectives, increased difficulty, and votekick protection.
