Sheffield is being transformed in the virtual world of Minecraft through an initiative called "Sheffield of Stories: The Big Sheffield Build," led by digital artist Adam Clarke. Residents are invited to recreate their favorite landmarks from Sheffield's past, present, or future. The National Video Game Museum in Sheffield is hosting drop-in "build" events for community members to contribute to the virtual map. Participants, including children like eight-year-old Jackson and ten-year-old Otis, are creating various structures, such as community buildings and a virtual bank. Flint Castle has been revitalized in Minecraft through an educational initiative by Cadw, allowing students from Ysgol Flint Gwynedd and Ysgol Cornist Park to explore a digital replica of the historic site. This is the fourth Welsh heritage site recreated in Minecraft, following Conwy Castle, Caernarfon Castle, and Harlech Castle. Since its launch in December 2024, the bilingual Minecraft resources have been downloaded over 7,000 times by educators in Wales. Flint Castle, built by King Edward I in 1277, played significant roles in British history, including the capture of King Richard II in 1399 and involvement in Owain Glyndŵr’s rebellion in 1400. The Minecraft world allows learners aged 8 to 14 to explore the castle and engage with the interactive Conflict Trail. Cadw plans to add around 20 more locations to the Minecraft world in the coming year, with resources available in Welsh and English.

Cybersecurity experts have raised concerns about potential threats targeting young players in Minecraft, particularly within its modding community. Mods can enhance gameplay but may also serve as vehicles for malware deployment. The Java Edition of Minecraft, which allows downloads from third-party websites, poses a higher risk compared to the Bedrock Edition, which features a built-in marketplace with safety reviews. Scammers can use mods to install malware that operates like a Trojan horse, potentially leading to the theft of sensitive information, including financial details. Although children may not have sensitive data, they often use shared devices, making cybersecurity education important. Experts recommend parental guidance, antivirus protection, and open discussions about internet safety. Microsoft has emphasized its commitment to player safety, implementing features such as abuse reporting, parental controls, and proactive moderation to create a safer gaming environment.

Genie 3, developed by Google DeepMind, allows users to create interactive 3D environments using brief text prompts. It enables exploration and manipulation of these virtual scenes for a limited time, maintaining stability and coherence for over a minute, unlike its predecessors, Genie 1 and 2. Genie 3 can respond instantly to new commands, allowing real-time changes without reloading. Currently, it is in research preview and accessible only to select academics and creators. The system has limitations, including basic interaction mechanics and challenges with multiple agents and accurate real-world replicas.
