Windows Media Player Legacy will soon lose its "Lyrics, captions, and subtitles" feature, with users being directed to the newer version of Windows Media Player for access. In Windows 11 Build 29648, users receive an error message when trying to activate this feature in the Legacy app. The new user interface simplifies the feature toggle but results in the error message, indicating Microsoft's intention to phase out the Legacy app. Microsoft must address feature gaps to compete with VLC Player, which offers functionalities that the new Windows player lacks.

Microsoft is reducing the functionality of Windows Media Player Legacy in the latest update, Windows 11 Experimental Build 29648.1000, by restricting caption controls. Users can no longer enable captions in the legacy player and are prompted to switch to the modern Media Player instead. This change was first noted by Windows enthusiast Xeno Panther and indicates a deliberate move by Microsoft to encourage users to adopt the newer application. In the previous Experimental Build 26340.9212, captions were still operational, but the latest build has removed options for Off and Defaults, leaving only "On if available." When attempting to activate captions, users receive a message stating that captions cannot be enabled in Windows Media Player Legacy. The modern Media Player does offer enhanced caption customization features, such as font size and color adjustments, but it has been criticized for its performance issues. The modern app takes longer to open videos and consumes significantly more RAM while idle compared to the legacy version. Additionally, the modern Media Player requires users to purchase HEVC Video Extensions to play HEVC files, which the legacy player supports without additional costs. Despite these changes, the Legacy Media Player still retains features like library view and CD burning, and it remains an optional feature in Windows 11. Microsoft has previously removed other functionalities from the legacy player, such as the Sync tab in 2023. As users look for alternatives, third-party open-source media players like VLC and mpv are becoming more popular, with mpv recommended for its performance and minimal interface.

Users of VLC on Windows 11 have experienced delays of up to 33 seconds for MP3 playback due to a bug in Microsoft Defender that interferes with VLC's plugin cache. VideoLAN has clarified that this issue is not a reflection of VLC's reliability. Affected users can resolve the problem by adding the VLC folder as an exception in Windows Defender or by regenerating the plugin cache. Jonathan Blow, a game developer, highlighted the issue in a tweet, prompting discussions about the state of open-source software. Other users have reported similar delays, even on Windows 10. VideoLAN emphasized that the problem lies with Microsoft Defender, not with VLC itself.

VLC, the open-source media player, is experiencing delays of up to 33 seconds when playing MP3 files on Windows 11, attributed to a recent update to Microsoft Defender that conflicts with VLC’s plugin cache. Developer Jonathan Blow criticized VLC for this issue, prompting the VLC team to clarify that the problem stems from Microsoft Defender quarantining the plugins.cache file. Users can resolve the issue by reinstalling VLC or regenerating the plugin cache, although this will reset personalized settings. Adding an exception for VLC in Microsoft Defender may prevent future issues. Microsoft has not yet commented on the situation.

Jonathan Blow criticized the VLC media player for significant performance issues, specifically a 33-second delay in loading MP3 files, and announced his intention to switch to Microsoft Media Player. The VideoLAN team responded, attributing the delays to a known issue with Microsoft’s Windows Defender antivirus software, which quarantines the VLC plugin cache. They suggested users could resolve the issue by reinstalling VLC or regenerating the plugin cache. VLC has been downloaded over 6 billion times across various platforms. Microsoft Defender has been known to cause false positives and interfere with third-party applications. Some users have found success using alternative antivirus solutions like Bitdefender Antivirus Free to avoid conflicts with VLC. Additionally, there are suggestions that using VLC for MP3 playback may not be practical, and switching to Microsoft Media Player is viewed unfavorably compared to alternatives like Foobar2000.

Jonathan Blow expressed frustration on social media about delays in opening MP3 files in VLC Media Player, which he claimed could take over 30 seconds. A community note suggested that Microsoft Defender might be contributing to the delay. VideoLAN, the organization behind VLC, responded to the discussion, while Blow maintained that VLC should address the issue, despite acknowledging a faulty AMD graphics driver as a factor. Users on Reddit indicated that adding VLC's folder as an exception in Microsoft Defender resolved the delay. Steps to create this exception include navigating to Windows Security, selecting Virus & threat protection, managing settings, and adding an exclusion for the VLC folder. After creating the exclusion, the time to open an MP3 file decreased from approximately five seconds to under one second.

Windows 11 users can download applications using the Windows Package Manager (winget) via the command line, bypassing traditional web browser navigation. Winget is integrated into Windows 11, modern Windows 10, and Windows Server 2025, simplifying application management. To use winget, users can open the Command Prompt, check for installation with "winget --version," search for applications with "winget search [app name]," and install them using "winget install [app name]." Users can also specify installation directories and utilize commands to list installed applications, show details about specific apps, and uninstall applications.
