The Dutch government is exploring alternatives to foreign messaging applications like WhatsApp and Signal to enhance its digital sovereignty. State Secretary Willemijn Aerdts has raised concerns about the risks of relying on these external platforms, prompting her ministry to initiate a pilot project to test a European messaging app. This project is part of a broader strategy to create a messaging platform entirely under Dutch control, aimed at safeguarding government communications and aligning with EU values and regulations. The initiative reflects a trend among European nations to prioritize digital sovereignty amid growing concerns over data privacy and security. The pilot project is expected to provide insights for future decisions on digital communication tools in the Netherlands.

Windows XP was launched in 2001 without an active firewall or integrated antivirus, exposing users to malware. The Internet Connection Firewall was included but not enabled by default, and it wasn't activated until Service Pack 2 was released nearly three years later. Microsoft introduced its antivirus solution, Microsoft Security Essentials, in 2009. Internet Explorer 6, included with Windows XP, had significant security vulnerabilities, allowing malware to easily infiltrate systems. The transition from Windows 95/98 to NT caused driver compatibility issues, leading to troubleshooting challenges for users. Network sharing features were unreliable, with many users experiencing difficulties connecting multiple XP PCs and sharing printers. Windows XP reached its refined state with Service Pack 3 in 2008 and ended mainstream support in 2014. Despite this, it continues to be used in some modern applications, such as self-checkout registers.

Google is introducing a new "advanced flow" for installing certain apps on Android, which will take effect later this year. This process includes a one-time setup that requires users to enable Developer Mode, confirm they are not being pressured into disabling security settings, restart their device, and undergo a 24-hour cooling-off period before verifying their identity through biometric authentication or a device PIN to install apps from unverified developers. Developers will soon need to provide personal information and, in some cases, a government-issued ID for verification, with mandatory requirements expected in select countries by September and globally by 2027. Google also plans to launch a "Registered App Stores" program outside the U.S. by the end of the year and is working on accommodating rival app stores within its Google Play Store in the U.S.

Windows 11 Pro is currently available for .97, which is a 93% discount from Microsoft's standard price of 9. The minimum system requirements for Windows 11 include a 1GHz or faster 64-bit CPU with at least two cores, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, TPM 2.0, and UEFI with Secure Boot. Windows 10 is nearing its end of support, meaning it will no longer receive security updates, which poses risks for users. Windows 11 includes features like BitLocker, Remote Desktop, Group Policy management, and AI-assisted Copilot. Users upgrading from Windows 10 should back up their files and ensure drivers are current. Windows 11 offers performance enhancements for gaming, such as DirectStorage and Auto HDR. Keys priced low are often OEM or volume-license keys tied to a single machine and may not be transferable.

Microsoft has decided to abandon plans to integrate Copilot more deeply into Windows 11 following user complaints. Features that would have introduced AI-driven notifications and enhancements are no longer being pursued. The company acknowledged user pain points and is shifting focus towards core stability fixes scheduled for 2026. Additionally, the launch of Windows Recall in 2024 faced privacy issues, leading to a revised version that includes data encryption and user authentication. Microsoft has also allowed administrators on Pro and Enterprise systems to uninstall the Copilot app under certain conditions, reflecting a response to user feedback and past update failures.

Belgium has introduced Beam, a secure messaging application developed by Belgian Secure Communications (BSC), intended to replace platforms like WhatsApp and Messenger for public sector communications. It will serve around 750,000 civil servants and military personnel, with an initial deployment among defence and intelligence staff. Beam is designed to safeguard sensitive information by limiting access to verified government personnel and storing data on servers in Belgium. The application has been rigorously tested for security and is part of Belgium's effort to enhance official communication safeguards following the 2016 terrorist attacks.

Microsoft is modernizing its Notepad application for Windows 11 by introducing new features, including support for image integration and AI-driven text tools. The image integration will allow users to add images to their documents via a new toolbar button. Notepad will also include AI features such as Write, Rewrite, and Summarise, available through a cloud-based system or on-device using the PC's Neural Processing Unit. The image insertion feature will be enabled by default but can be disabled in settings. Concerns have been raised about the potential security vulnerabilities associated with these enhancements, including a recently disclosed high-severity vulnerability in Notepad.
