PlayStation PC Games Run On The New Xbox Handheld

Asus has unveiled the ROG Xbox Ally handheld devices, which allow access to Microsoft's library of PC games as well as PlayStation's PC game offerings. These devices run Windows, enabling users to play various titles from Sony, including Days Gone, The Last of Us, Spider-Man, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Helldivers 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and God of War Ragnarök. The devices are expected to support PlayStation remote play from the PS5 and come in two models: the ROG Xbox Ally and the ROG Xbox Ally X. They feature an "Xbox full-screen experience" and a dedicated Xbox button, along with the Game Bar overlay for easy navigation. Microsoft has paused development on a standalone Xbox handheld but is working on a new Xbox console that may include a handheld device.

Star Trek Beyond writer Jung to helm Mass Effect show

Doug Jung has been appointed as the head writer and showrunner for the upcoming Mass Effect TV series. He will also serve as an executive producer alongside Dan Casey and Michael Gamble. Amazon Studios announced the greenlighting of the series in November 2024, but no official release window has been provided.

This is my favorite video editing app, and for good reason

Megan Ellis from Android Authority reviewed various video editing applications and highlighted her favorite, Edits, which received 29% of votes in a recent poll, while CapCut led with 38%. Edits is entirely free and offers features like easy clip stitching, transitions, audio incorporation, and the ability to generate captions from voiceovers. It allows exports in 4K resolution at 60fps and includes a cutout functionality for tracking objects in videos. However, users need an Instagram account to access Edits, and export times can be slower than desired. Concerns exist about Edits being a Meta product and potential future monetization. Alternatives suggested include InShot, Adobe Express, VN, YouCut, and LightCut.

In contrast, PlayStation games often retain their retail prices longer, limiting discount availability. The basic PS Plus plan costs .99 annually, similar to the price of a new game, while the 'Premium' plan costs 9.99 and lacks day-one title access. Xbox Game Pass offers better value with new games available on release day. Overall, while the initial investment in a gaming PC is high, the savings on games and lack of subscription fees make it a worthwhile choice.

This app has been shipping with Windows for decades, and it needs to go away

The Character Map is a tool in Windows designed to help users access uncommon characters and symbols not available on the keyboard. However, it is considered convoluted and unnecessary due to its complicated access process and cumbersome selection method. Microsoft has introduced a more efficient emoji keyboard in Windows 11, which allows users to quickly select symbols by pressing Windows + . (period) and is more user-friendly than the Character Map. The emoji panel saves the last twelve used symbols for easy access. It is suggested that the Character Map would be better suited as a feature within Microsoft Office, where symbol selection is more relevant. The Character Map is viewed as one of several outdated features in Windows 11 that may need removal to improve the user experience.

Emptyvessel secures $11m in Series A funding

Developer Emptyvessl has raised million in Series A funding, led by NCSoft and 1AM Gaming, with contributions from Black Phoenix Games, Anurup Joseph, Sebastiaan Hejne, and earlier investors like Sisu Game Ventures, Raptor Group, and Compute. NCSoft previously invested in Emptyvessl in May. The company is developing a first-person cyberpunk squad-based shooter called Defect, with a team experienced in titles like Doom, Quake, Borderlands, and The Last of Us. CEO Emanuel Palalic noted that the funding will help expand single-player support and reach across various platforms.
