Researchers uncovered a scam involving 28 fraudulent applications on the Google Play Store, collectively called "CallPhantom," which garnered over 7.3 million downloads. These apps promised access to call logs, SMS records, and WhatsApp history for any phone number, but users received fabricated data after paying a fee. The apps varied in appearance but shared a common strategy of generating random phone numbers and pairing them with pre-existing names and call details. Some requested email addresses to send the 'retrieved' history, but none had the necessary permissions to access the claimed data. Payment methods included Google Play’s official billing system and third-party platforms, with some apps misleading users into staying on subscription screens. ESET reported these apps to Google on December 16, leading to their removal from the Play Store.

A bug in Microsoft's weather systems caused the Windows 11 weather widget and other displays to show temperatures as high as 30,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This anomaly has been reported by users, with one screenshot showing a temperature of 30,014 degrees Fahrenheit. The issue is attributed to a programming error, as the Earth's surface temperature is generally much cooler than this figure.

The Google Pixel 9 series is set to launch next week, and leaks have revealed a new standalone Weather app that is now available for unofficial sideloading on any Android 14 device. The app, which debuted on APKMirror, allows users to experience its functionalities before the official release, though it may not be fully polished and could lead to crashes. The Weather app has transitioned from being integrated within the Clock app to its own application, but it currently lacks weather widgets. It will come preloaded on the Pixel 9 series and will also be available for older Pixel devices in the future. Users can access the app without signing into their Google accounts, but doing so allows for synchronization of saved locations, although previously set locations will not migrate to the new app. Future features hinted at in the app's code include notifications for precipitation, weather forecasts, a weather map, and AI Weather Summaries.
