Google has introduced new features to enhance user security on its Android platform during Cybersecurity Awareness Month, focusing on combating messaging and phone scams. The key feature is an enhanced protection mode for the Google Messages app, which includes Scam Detection using Private AI Compute to analyze message context and identify scammer intent through cloud-based Gemini models. This mode complements existing on-device detection and aims to uncover sophisticated scams while ensuring user data remains encrypted and secure. Additionally, link protections have been upgraded with real-time web signals to assess unfamiliar links' trustworthiness, available on select devices such as Pixel 10+, Samsung Galaxy S26 series, Galaxy Z Flip 8, and Z Fold 8. Redesigned warnings will provide clearer context before users tap links from unknown numbers, previously limited to select countries or devices with Android Advanced Protection. Google is also expanding its on-device Scam Detection to more brands beyond Pixel, including HONOR, Infinix, iQOO, itel, JOVI, Motorola, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, TECNO, vivo, and Xiaomi. For phone scams, automatic screen-share privacy will conceal sensitive information in native apps and extend to Chrome and WebView on devices running Android 15 and above. Google plans to block apps from enabling call forwarding in the background to prevent one-time passcode theft, with this feature rolling out in early December on Pixel and select other devices. Android will also proactively warn users if a scammer attempts to trick them into entering an MMI forwarding code.

IAB Tech Lab has released version 1.6.10 of its Open Measurement SDK for Android, introducing the ability for verification scripts for native ads to run within Android's Jetpack JavaScriptEngine instead of the traditional WebView. This update, effective from October 1, 2026, allows for a significant reduction in verification check initiation time, with the sandbox environment taking approximately 11 milliseconds compared to 268 milliseconds in the WebView. Applications that do not implement this new feature will continue to function as before, and HTML-based ads are not included in this update. The JavaScriptEngine library allows JavaScript evaluation without a WebView, reducing resource consumption and enabling compatibility with background services. The adoption process for this feature involves updating to OM SDK Android 1.6.10 or later, integrating the androidx.javascriptengine dependency, and maintaining the sandbox throughout the app's lifecycle.

More than 70% of the world’s smartphones operate on the Android platform. Users often struggle to find apps that address specific issues, leading to a time-consuming search through numerous options. A curated list presents five applications that provide practical solutions to common mobile frustrations. 1. AppsFree: Monitors Google Play for premium apps, games, and wallpapers that temporarily drop to free, allowing users to snag deals that would otherwise be missed. Developed by ts-apps GmbH, it enables users to blacklist developers and filter low-quality offers. 2. Monocles Browser: Prioritizes user privacy by disabling JavaScript and cookies by default, reducing tracking. It has an APK size of approximately 13–14 MB and integrates ad blocking and supports Tor/Orbot proxy networks. Created by Arne-Brün Vogelsang, it offers a clean browsing experience. 3. Amarok: Allows users to instantly hide files and applications without resource-intensive encryption by obfuscating filenames and signatures. It supports multiple hiding modes and includes a “panic button” feature for quick data concealment. 4. Buckwheat: Budget manager: Requires manual input of total budget and days to cover, promoting financial reflection. It calculates daily spending allowances and provides detailed analytics. Android devices with the Google Play Store have a hidden 'System services' menu that allows users to manage updates for essential system services. This menu includes various modules such as Adaptive Connectivity Services, Android AICore, Android System WebView, Google Play Protect Service, and many others. Users can apply pending updates or remove recent updates from this menu, which is useful for troubleshooting. Most modules allow for one-tap updates, though some may require a device restart. These modules receive monthly updates through Google Play System updates, and while manual updates are available, automatic background installations occur over time. The update distribution model originates from Google's Project Treble and Project Mainline, which aim to streamline the OS update process by allowing independent updates for various services.

Google has introduced several network security enhancements in Android 17 to improve user privacy. One key feature is Encrypted Client Hello (ECH), which encrypts domain names to prevent external observers from monitoring user activities. ECH is integrated with private DNS and is enabled by default for apps using compatible networking libraries. Google claims to be the first major mobile operating system to implement widespread ECH support. Testing conducted by Jigsaw showed stable connection success rates and minimal interference across various networks. Additional security features in Android 17 include: - Local Network Protection, requiring apps to request permission before accessing devices on a user's home network. - Certificate Transparency, mandating public logging of certificates to detect forged ones. - A 2G Network Shutdown option for mobile operators to disable 2G services, reducing exposure to phishing messages.
